Former Senate President Calls for Unity within PDP Following Supreme Court Ruling
Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the former President of the Senate, has urged the newly elected leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to regard last Thursday’s Supreme Court decision as a catalyst for immediate unity within the party. He emphasized the need for the PDP to prepare its candidates effectively for the upcoming 2027 elections.
In a statement issued through his media office, Saraki highlighted that the judgment effectively validates his longstanding position regarding the party’s internal disputes. He asserted that the national conference held in Ibadan should never have taken place and advocated for a more pragmatic interim solution to prevent drawn-out litigations that complicate reconciliation efforts.
Reflecting on his prior discussions with key party figures, Saraki reiterated his stance during meetings with the party’s Committee of Elders, specifically mentioning his consultations with Ambassador Hassan Adamu, the committee’s chair. He consistently made the case for an approach that would facilitate internal cohesion rather than perpetuate divisions.
“With all legal avenues having been exhausted, the Supreme Court has ruled that the agreements from the Ibadan Treaty, along with their implications, are null and void. This ruling affirms that the National Working Committee, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed Takshala, remains the official leadership recognized both legally and by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” he stated. He stressed the importance of building unity within the PDP across all states and territories.
Saraki emphasized that the dialogue should concentrate on collective efforts to strengthen the party, enabling both current members and potential new supporters to perceive the PDP as a trustworthy platform for achieving their political aspirations and enhancing governance in Nigeria.
“The emphasis should shift away from winning or losing; instead, those who faced legal defeats should regard their experiences as contributions toward the party’s renewal. I am pleased to see the PDP poised to be on the ballot for the 2027 elections,” he remarked.
He also called upon party members who have been engaged in prolonged legal battles to adopt this forward-looking perspective. “Today, the PDP stands as the singular viable alternative, unimpeded by the obstacles facing other opposition parties in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. The turbulence has subsided; it’s time for every leader and party member to unify and march forward together,” he added, expressing optimism for the party’s future.
In concluding his statements, Saraki extended his congratulations to members of the National Working Committee and encouraged them to focus on cultivating a disciplined, rule-oriented, and democratic party dedicated to national advancement. “Ultimately, the goal remains to secure victory in the 2027 polls,” he affirmed.
