Argentina international and Inter Miami CF star Lionel Messi emphasized that Neymar deserves to represent Brazil in the World Cup, citing him as one of the world’s top players. Messi expressed his sentiments during an appearance on Polo Alvarez’s program, Lo del Polo.
Messi remarked on the importance of having elite players like Neymar in the tournament, stating, “We want the best players to take part in the World Cup, and Neymar will always be part of it, regardless of his form. It would be fantastic to see him play, considering his significance to Brazil and to football as a whole.” He added that while he hopes Neymar will compete, he is unable to be objective due to their friendship.
Friendship and Shared History
At 38, Messi and 34-year-old Neymar have maintained a strong friendship since their time together at FC Barcelona, where they played for four seasons, followed by another two years at Paris Saint-Germain. Both players transitioned from PSG in 2023, with Messi moving to MLS’s Inter Miami and Neymar joining Al Hilal in the Saudi Professional League.
Messi praised Neymar’s charismatic personality, stating, “He has a special charisma. He doesn’t act; he simply lives life authentically, without worrying about the consequences. He’s very natural and genuinely happy.” Neymar returned to Santos just over a year ago and is eager to regain his top form ahead of his fourth World Cup appearance with Brazil.
Neymar’s Challenges
Unfortunately, Neymar has struggled with injuries and poor form, sidelining him from the Brazilian national team since October 2023. The all-time leading scorer for Brazil, with 79 goals, has been omitted from the squad since Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as manager in June. Ancelotti commented last month, “He has the ability to return to 100%,” regarding Neymar’s potential comeback.
Neymar underwent minor surgery on his left knee on December 22, followed by another operation later in March. Messi remains optimistic, noting that while Argentina is a contender, teams like France, Spain, and Brazil are also strong favorites for the upcoming World Cup.
Strong Competition Ahead
Messi highlighted the complexities of the World Cup, stating, “It’s always a challenging affair due to the caliber of competing teams. We must be hopeful, as all Argentines are with every official competition, but we also need to recognize that other teams may arrive in better shape.” He identified France as particularly robust, mentioning their wealth of talent, while acknowledging Spain’s and Brazil’s recent struggles yet deeming them potential favorites.
He also considered Germany, England, and Portugal as strong contenders, noting Portugal’s competitiveness and quality. Regarding the unpredictability of the tournament, Messi remarked, “There are many high-level teams, and surprises are always possible.”
Argentina’s Playing Form
Messi offered insights into Argentina’s preparations, conveying confidence in the team’s readiness despite several players grappling with injuries. He stated, “Whenever the group comes together, this squad has always demonstrated its competitive spirit and relentless pursuit of victory.”
Furthermore, he acknowledged the influx of young players within Argentine ranks, who will be participating in their second World Cup. “Although they’re still young, they’ve gained substantial experience,” he noted, also observing that new talents continue to emerge within the national team.
While Messi did not discuss retirement plans, he conveyed his enduring passion for football, asserting, “I love the game so much that I will continue to play as long as I am able.”
