Tracy Neville Highlights Key Player Ahead of Netball Super League Qualifying Final
Former England head coach Tracy Neville has identified the crucial player Loughborough Lightning will need as they prepare to face reigning champions London Pulse in the Netball Super League qualifying final, set to air live on Sky Sports this Saturday.
With both teams vying for a spot in the grand final, the winner will face AO Manchester Thunder at the Co-op Live Arena on June 20th. The Pulse enters the match following a narrow 60-56 defeat to the Thunder in the major semi-final, while the Lightning comes off a convincing 77-57 victory against Nottingham Forest Netball in the minor semi-final. Neville has pinpointed a key player that could propel Loughborough to success.
Alice Harvey’s Impact on Lightning’s Chances
Neville expressed confidence in the return of Alice Harvey, noting that Loughborough has consistently triumphed over AO Manchester Thunder with Harvey as their goalkeeper. On the Off the Court podcast, she pointed out, “If they make it to the finals, we’ve probably got one card that we haven’t seen in a while.” Her optimistic assessment underscores Harvey’s potential to turn the tide for the Lightning.
Although Harvey’s presence could be a game-changer, Neville is cautious about underestimating the Pulse. Despite their semi-final setback, the Pulse achieved an impressive record, winning 12 of their 14 Super League matches this season. Neville commented, “I don’t think London Pulse’s form is where it should be, but they still finished second in the league.”
The Final’s Stakes and Atmosphere
Neville emphasized that Saturday’s match could go either way. “Loughborough has been pretty consistent but remember, this is the final. There are no second chances; it’s do or die before you get to the Co-op arena.” Her comments reflect the high stakes and intense atmosphere surrounding the match.
Potential Challenges for Nottingham Forest Netball
Reflecting on Nottingham Forest Netball’s journey, which saw them reach the semi-finals in just their second season, Neville acknowledged the missed opportunities that came with their loss to the Lightning. “I feel like it was disjointed,” she remarked, pointing out that key players were missing during the crucial game.
Despite the challenges faced, she believes the final showcases the significant gap between the top teams and the rest of the league. “The top three teams are far away from the rest of the league at the moment, which is a bit of a disappointing situation,” she noted.
Pulse’s Resilience and Defensive Struggles
Despite their semi-final loss, Neville remains optimistic about the Pulse’s chances. She observed, “There were exceptional parts of the London Pulse game,” while noting that their defensive performance could improve. “I wanted the Pulse defense to try harder in the first phase,” she stated. “Four goals is not a big deal at this level.”
The Netball Super League Preliminary Final will be available for free streaming on the Sky Sports YouTube channel, starting at 3 PM on Saturday. For those with Sky Sports, additional content and matches can be streamed without a contract.
