Luis Suarez Reflects on Bench Decision and Career Experience
Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez expressed his curiosity regarding former head coach Javier Mascherano’s decision to keep him on the bench but noted that his experiences have taught him patience and resilience.
In comments to reporters, Suarez acknowledged that Mascherano had discussed the rationale behind his benching, a situation he accepted without complaint. “I understood it and accepted it without any problems,” he stated. However, he admitted that as his time on the pitch diminished, he began to question the reasons behind the decision. “During the time I did play, I felt I performed well, but ultimately, those are decisions that must be respected,” he said.
Mascherano opted to bench Suarez during the 2025 MLS Playoffs following a one-game suspension for the opening round against Nashville SC. The forward’s return to the starting lineup came in the 2026 season under new caretaker manager Guillermo Hoyos after initially starting as a substitute.
So far this season, Suarez has made a notable impact, contributing two goals and two assists in seven MLS appearances. He reflected on the fluctuations in his career, recognizing that such ups and downs are a common experience for all players. “There are times when you’re on top of the world, and others when you’re not feeling your best,” he explained. His suspension and subsequent limited playing time provided a period of introspection, which he believes helped him regain his composure.
Suarez made the decision to stay with Inter Miami for the 2026 season, signing a new one-year contract in December. “This choice stemmed from the realization that I still have both energy and the desire to compete,” he shared. “You can see it in my play; I still get frustrated with losses and appreciate the moments when I score.” His enthusiasm for the game remains evident, as he continues to channel his passion onto the field.
The forward has also addressed speculation about jealousy concerning fellow player Germain Belterrame, who joined the team during the off-season. Suarez clarified that he fully supports new teammates, emphasizing their collective goal. “Bertelame is an incredibly talented player, and my focus has always been to assist him in his development,” he stated. “Given my experience, my role will always lean toward mentoring younger players.” This collaborative spirit is indicative of his commitment to the team’s success.
Hoyos has strategically paired Suarez and Belterrame, encouraging them to forge a strong partnership on the field. As Inter Miami gears up for their next match against Toronto FC at BMO Field this Saturday, Suarez’s leadership and experience will be crucial for the team’s performance.
