Luke Woodhouse Claims Second PDC Tour Title in Quick Succession
Luke Woodhouse has secured the second Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) Tour title of his career, just 12 days after achieving his first victory. This latest triumph came in the form of an 8-4 win over Ryan Joyce in the final of the Baltic Sea Darts Open held in Germany.
Following his success in the Players Championship 18 final on May 19, where he defeated Andrew Gilding, Woodhouse added his first European Tour title to his accolades after a compelling weekend performance in Kiel.
At 37, Woodhouse made his PDC debut in 2013 and participated in nearly 400 main tour tournaments before finally clinching his first title. Now, with two titles in quick succession, he appears to be hitting his stride.
In the quarter-finals, Woodhouse overcame Jimmy Van See with a score of 6-3, followed by a 7-2 victory against Ricky Evans in the semi-finals. He started strongly against Joyce, establishing an early 3-0 lead in the final match.
Even as Joyce mounted a comeback, Woodhouse extended his lead to 5-3 and sealed the victory with an impressive 160 checkout in the 12th leg. He expressed his elation at the win, characterizing the experience as similar to waiting for a bus; one waits for years, and then two come at once.
Reflecting on the final match, Woodhouse acknowledged the challenges, stating that neither player delivered their best performance. However, both were highly focused, knowing the opportunity at stake, which led to their determination to secure the win.
After previously succumbing to Stephen Bunting in the 2022 Swiss Darts Trophy final, Woodhouse expressed his enjoyment of competing at a high level and the significance of this latest win for him. With the World Matchplay approaching, he hopes that the momentum gained from this victory will bolster his confidence moving forward.
Notable Moments from the Baltic Sea Darts Open
Woodhouse began Sunday’s competition as one of only four seeded players still in contention for a spot in the final eight. Notably, Jean Van Veen and James Wade, the current top two players, were eliminated in the third round by Dave Chisnall and Ricky Evans, respectively.
In the quarter-finals, Chisnall was defeated 6-1 by Joyce, who later triumphed in a thrilling 7-6 semi-final match against Damon Heta.
