Max Verstappen’s Potential Exit from Red Bull Signals Turmoil in F1 Driver Market
Sky Sports F1 presenter Simon Lazenby warns that Max Verstappen’s potential departure from Red Bull could lead to significant upheaval in the Formula 1 driver market. Sources indicate that discussions between Verstappen’s representatives and McLaren commenced last week, prompting Red Bull’s team manager, Laurent Mekies, to acknowledge the need for the team to demonstrate to Verstappen why he should stay beyond 2027.
Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028; however, insiders reveal that the agreement includes a release clause. This clause would enable the Dutch driver to leave for another team in 2027, but only if he ranks outside the top two in the drivers’ championship by the summer break in August.
Currently, with three races left before the summer break, Verstappen holds the seventh position in the standings, trailing second-placed George Russell by 58 points and his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, by 40 points. Lazenby noted on the F1 Show, “The key is Max Verstappen. If someone takes Max away, everything will be thrown into chaos again.”
If Verstappen does indeed exit Red Bull, it will undoubtedly affect the entire grid, as a position will be available at one of F1’s premier teams. Speculation is rife that a trade could occur between Oscar Piastri and Verstappen. Additionally, Red Bull may consider acquiring Carlos Sainz from Williams or promoting Britain’s Arvid Lindblad from their Racing Bulls program.
McLaren’s Zak Brown Discusses Possibilities
Addressing the media ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, was reticent to dismiss the idea of Verstappen joining his team. He expressed skepticism about any significant changes among his current drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, given their satisfaction with the team. Yet he acknowledged the allure of having a four-time world champion like Verstappen should a unique situation arise.
Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft emphasized that Brown’s discussions with other drivers are merely a part of his responsibilities as team CEO. “It’s not about wanting to replace anyone; it’s about understanding the landscape and staying informed,” Croft remarked. However, he suggested that Piastri’s management might not take kindly to Brown’s hypothetical discussions about adding Verstappen to the team.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok added that the dynamics at play are typical for such high-stakes negotiations. “All parties are simply fulfilling their roles,” he stated. “Verstappen’s manager Raymond Vermeulen is evaluating options for his client. Meanwhile, team principals like Zak need to keep tabs on potential drivers available in the market.”
