Applications Now Open for the 2027 MEST AI Startup Program
The MEST AI Startup Program is inviting applications until July 20, 2026. This fully-funded, 12-month initiative aims to empower ambitious founders from West and East Africa who are eager to shape the future of AI. Participants will dedicate seven months to team formation, validation of a real-world AI business concept, development and deployment of a minimum viable product (MVP), and learning from industry leaders affiliated with Google, Meta, OpenAI, and others. The most promising startups will progress into a four-month incubation phase focused on scaling operations, acquiring customers, and preparing for pre-seed investments.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the program, applicants must fulfill several requirements. Educationally, candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or equivalent experience. Age-wise, participants should be between 21 to 35 years. Prospective entrants must demonstrate proven software development experience, a basic understanding of AI, and a strong desire for entrepreneurship. An ideal candidate is someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, innovative thinking, and problem-solving skills, ready to thrive in a dynamic startup environment. Citizenship must be from one of the designated West or East African countries, such as Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, or Kenya. Shortlisted candidates from other regions should be prepared to travel at their own expense for an in-person interview. Lastly, applicants should commit to a full-time engagement for up to 12 months, including seven months of training followed by four months of incubation.
Desired Skills
Priority will be given to individuals who excel in working in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams. Candidates with experience in AI innovation and aspirations to expand into global markets will stand out. Previous entrepreneurial experience is also advantageous for potential participants.
Program Structure and Sponsorship
The MEST AI Startup Program is entirely sponsored, meaning no monetary investment is required from participants. The program is a full-time residential opportunity, necessitating a commitment of at least seven months for training, followed by an optional four months in the incubation phase for chosen ventures.
Training and Incubation Timeline
The program is divided into distinct phases to nurture participants from idea to investment. From January to July, accepted participants will engage in AI software development, business fundamentals with experts, team formation, and customer feedback initiatives. By August, participants will graduate from the training phase, with some ventures progressing into the incubation stage.
From September through December, selected ventures will conduct market testing and product iterations, while also receiving mentorship from industry experts. This phase will focus on user acquisition, growth strategies, and creating a sustainable roadmap. In January, ventures that have demonstrated strong results will transition to the MEST portfolio and may receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment, along with ongoing support for growth from MEST.
Incubation Program Focus
The four-month incubation program will target select promising ventures that emerge from the training phase. Emphasizing the transition from MVPs to market-ready AI products, the program will facilitate customer acquisition and operational scaling. By the end of the incubation, each startup aims to have a fully functional AI product, a validated business model, a strategic funding plan, and a clear growth roadmap, positioning them well for future investments.
Application Timeline
The application window opens on May 19, 2026, and closes on July 20, 2026. Candidates will participate in a face-to-face group challenge and personal interview in early October 2026, with contract issuance scheduled for mid-October 2026.
