Leclerc Takes Responsibility for Miami Grand Prix Mishap
Charles Leclerc expressed regret after what he described as “throwing a very strong race into the trash” during the tumultuous Miami Grand Prix, ultimately resulting in a stewards’ penalty that relegated the Ferrari driver to eighth place.
Strong Start Derailed by Chaos
Leclerc launched from the second row of the grid, seizing the lead early on. However, an early safety car period saw him slip back to third behind Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli. Despite holding a podium position for much of the race, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri overtook him on the penultimate lap, pushing Leclerc to fourth.
Final Lap Catastrophe
Disaster struck on the last lap when Leclerc spun into the wall at Turn 3, causing significant damage to his car. Although he managed to continue racing, he struggled to maintain control, ultimately finishing sixth behind George Russell of Mercedes and Max Verstappen of Red Bull.
Punishment for Corner Cutting
Following the incident, race stewards reviewed Leclerc’s actions, investigating an alleged corner cut after his spin. The decision to impose a 20-second penalty—rather than a drive-through—pushed him further down the grid to eighth place, behind teammate Lewis Hamilton and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto.
Leclerc Reflects on His Mistakes
Before the penalty was announced, an exasperated Leclerc shared his thoughts with Sky Sports F1. He acknowledged the necessity of allowing Piastri to pass on the penultimate lap but labeled it a “very bad decision.” Reflecting on the difficult end to his race, he stated, “I binned a very strong race in the space of the fourth corner.” Leclerc also noted the challenges he faced while trying to navigate his damaged car.
Stewards’ Ruling on Mechanical Issues
Leclerc informed the stewards that his vehicle struggled to turn properly after the wall collision. However, after investigating, officials concluded that his mechanical issues did not justify the corner cutting. They determined that by leaving the track, he gained a lasting advantage, warranting the penalty.
Looking Ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix
The outcome leaves Leclerc and the Ferrari team with much to ponder as Formula 1 moves on to the Canadian Grand Prix and Sprint Weekend in Montreal. Fans can catch all the action live from May 22 to 24 on Sky Sports F1.
