Nigerian Army Reports Extensive Security Operations in Early 2026
The Nigerian Army has outlined its significant achievements in national security efforts during the first half of 2026, conducting a remarkable 14,221 operations across the country. These coordinated efforts, which spanned land, air, and sea missions, targeted various threats including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, arms trafficking, and oil theft.
According to military reports, these operations resulted in the rescue of 1,516 hostages and the neutralization of 1,597 terrorists and insurgents. Such outcomes reflect the focused approach the Army has taken to combat persistent criminal activities threatening national stability.
At a recent joint press briefing at the National Counter-Terrorism Center in Abuja, the Director of Defense Intelligence (DDI), Major General Samaira Uba, highlighted these operational successes, noting the involvement of various defense and law enforcement agencies in maintaining security. He was represented at the event by his deputy, Group Captain Kabir Ali.
General Uba indicated that the military’s operational efforts included the recovery of 451 firearms, 16,726 rounds of ammunition, and 161 explosives, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This arsenals recovery is pivotal in disrupting the capabilities of criminal groups and ensuring public safety.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have been relentless in their operations from January to June 2026, achieving impactful results against terrorism and violent crime,” Uba stated. The security operations, which spanned all six geopolitical zones, concentrated on high-risk areas such as Borno, Yobe, Taraba, and Kaduna states, where threats from various criminal enterprises are most pronounced.
In tandem with kinetic operations, the military has focused on fostering peace and civil-military relations, engaging in 33 dialogue initiatives and 13 public awareness campaigns. Notably, they also organized 33 stakeholder meetings with community leaders to discuss ongoing security issues and potential solutions. A key achievement during this time was the successful rescue of 261 abducted individuals from insurgent-controlled territories.
During these ongoing efforts, troops from Operation Hadin Kai successfully neutralized 412 Boko Haram and ISWAP militants, while also arresting 332 suspects. The operation’s sustained pressure has led to the surrender of 132 members of these terrorist factions. Furthermore, significant quantities of weapons, motorcycles, and livestock have been confiscated during the clearing of insurgent camps.
Over the six-month period, the military issued 593 press releases to ensure transparency and keep the public informed. In addition, they addressed 15 cases of misinformation and provided 10 public safety advisories. Uba reaffirmed the military’s commitment to intensifying operations against terrorism and other criminal acts, emphasizing that the collaboration between military operations and community support is vital in achieving lasting security throughout Nigeria.
