Senate President Addresses Concerns Over Military Spending and Election Promises
Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, recently clarified the Senate’s stance on military spending investigations, emphasizing the potential negative impact of public scrutiny on military morale during a pivotal time for Nigeria. He argued that exposing military expenditures to legislative oversight while the armed forces confront terrorism, banditry, and various security threats could compromise their effectiveness.
In addition, Akpabio refuted claims suggesting he had promised reserved senatorial tickets for incumbent senators losing the party’s primaries, describing such reports as misleading and misrepresentative of his views. His remarks came through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Eseme Eiboh, outlining the Senate’s reasoning behind rejecting an inquiry into military funding.
Last Wednesday, the Senate dismissed a motion aimed at investigating military expenditures amid deteriorating security conditions nationwide. The motion was introduced by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, who raised concerns regarding the recent kidnapping of students and educators in attacks across Oyo State.
During the discussions, Senator Adams Oshiomhole called for a thorough audit of military spending, advocating for enhanced accountability within the security sector. Senator Sani Musa echoed this sentiment, expressing apprehension about the possible misallocation of military funds.
Barau Jibrin, the Senate Vice President who presided over the session, acknowledged the validity of calls for scrutiny but stated that procedural issues led to the rejection of Oshiomhole’s proposal. Akpabio supported this decision, reinforcing the idea that while the National Assembly holds constitutional oversight responsibilities, now is not the appropriate time for a public inquiry into military finances.
“The Senate President strongly believes that fostering support and engagement with security agencies yields better results during such critical periods,” the statement emphasized. It also highlighted the necessity of conducting surveillance responsibly, avoiding distractions that could empower adversaries or detract from urgent national security priorities.
Furthermore, Akpabio reiterated that he had not made any promises regarding senatorial elections for those defeated in the APC primaries, asserting that these rumors do not align with his official position. He expressed sympathy for the senators adversely affected by primary outcomes while assuring that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership is diligently working to address any arising issues. The final list of candidates will be disclosed in accordance with party guidelines and electoral regulations.
In closing, Akpabio called on journalists and the public to refrain from disseminating sensational and inaccurate information, urging them to verify details through his office prior to publication. He stressed his commitment to party discipline and the integrity of the APC’s internal dispute resolution processes, ensuring he would not interfere with party autonomy or step outside the constitutional framework governing the National Assembly’s operations.
