Strategic Leadership Changes in the Nigerian Army
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Widi Shaibu, has initiated a significant reorganization within the Nigerian Army, appointing new theater commanders, General Officers Commanding (GOCs), and 15 additional generals. This strategic move aims to enhance the Army’s capacity in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other emerging security threats throughout the nation.
General Shaibu expressed optimism that the integration of over 8,000 newly trained soldiers will bolster ongoing military operations, contributing to the restoration of enduring peace and bolstering security in Nigeria. The expansive leadership shakeup touches on crucial operational areas, training, and personnel assignments, reflecting the Army’s commitment to improving its operational effectiveness and addressing evolving security challenges.
New Appointments within the Army Command Structure
The reassignments extend to field commanders, leadership of military agencies, and critical staff roles at Army headquarters, as outlined by Colonel Apollonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations. Major General WM Dangana has been positioned as the new Commander of the Nigerian Army 3rd Division and Joint Task Force for Operation Enduring Peace, succeeding Major General EF Oyinlola.
Additionally, Major General EI Okoro takes over the 6th Division and will also lead Operation Delta Safe for the South-South Joint Task Force. In other notable appointments, Major General J.R. Rah has been designated as the Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison Force, while Brigadier General OM Oyekola assumes the role of Acting Chief of Military Affairs.
Enhancing Operational Readiness and Technological Focus
Brigadier General I. Waziri continues in his role as COAS Chief of Staff, while Brigadier General IB Buhari has been appointed as the 63rd Brigade Headquarters Commander. Meanwhile, Brigadier General K. Rabiu will command the Headquarters 31st Artillery Brigade. Importantly, Major General SA Emmanuel is now the Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Force, highlighting the Army’s emphasis on innovative warfare strategies and technology-driven security operations.
Key changes are also in place for military education and institutional development. Major General KE Chigbu has been appointed as Deputy Commandant of the National Defense College, and Major General SD Makolo takes the helm at the Nigerian Army Armored School. Moreover, Major General SO Adedjimi will lead the Nigerian Army Logistics Transportation School, while Major General FS Etim becomes the Director of Training at the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). Brigadier General U. Ahmad has been named Commandant of the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria.
New Leadership Mandate and Expectations
Additional appointments include Major General KO Ukandu as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Post Housing Development Limited (PHDL) and Major General AI Allison as Managing Director of Defense Properties Limited. The COAS emphasized the need for these newly appointed senior officers to demonstrate exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Armed Forces’ constitutional mandate to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and assist in maintaining peace and security.
General Shaibu reiterated that the Nigerian Armed Forces are firmly committed to a transformational agenda aimed at creating a highly professional, combat-ready, and people-oriented force capable of fulfilling Nigeria’s national security objectives and effectively addressing both current and future security threats.
Strengthening the Force with New Recruits
In conjunction with the leadership changes, Lieutenant General Shaibu announced the deployment of over 8,000 newly trained soldiers. He conveyed confidence in their potential to significantly enhance ongoing military operations and contribute to lasting peace in Nigeria. This announcement came during the passing-out parade for new recruits at the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo, Osun State, where he highlighted the importance of this graduation in bolstering the military’s manpower for sustained operations against terrorism, insurgency, and other threats.
Furthermore, General Shaibu noted that this training aligns with the directives of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to augment the military’s personnel by an additional 28,000 recruits. This initiative is aimed at meeting existing workforce demands, improving operational efficacy, and ensuring a robust response to the nation’s dynamic security landscape.
