Media’s Role in Countering Terrorism Emphasized by Nigeria’s Defense Minister
General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, has underscored the vital contribution of the media in the nation’s ongoing fight against terrorism and the challenges posed by asymmetric warfare. His remarks came during a visit by executives from the Defense Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) to the Ministry of Defense in Abuja.
During the meeting, General Musa highlighted the necessity of fostering a robust partnership between the military and the media. He asserted that such collaboration is crucial for ensuring that the Nigerian public receives accurate and timely information regarding defense and security matters.
General Musa stated that terrorism originates from extremist ideologies, which cannot be effectively countered through military means alone. “Information plays a key role in changing mindsets,” he explained. He cautioned that the public sometimes inadvertently amplifies terrorist rhetoric on social media, reinforcing the importance of the media in disseminating accurate narratives and raising awareness.
In light of the current landscape of asymmetric warfare, the Minister reiterated his commitment to maintaining an open policy towards the media. “The military truly requires the support of the media,” he said, emphasizing the need for effective communication to inform the public properly.
The Minister assured DECAN delegates that their proposals would be thoroughly evaluated, with the intent to implement those deemed feasible without delay. He encouraged defense correspondents to uphold standards of fairness, balance, and professionalism, noting that responsible journalism is paramount for national security and public trust.
Earlier in the day, DECAN President Odita congratulated General Musa on his recent appointment as Minister of Defence, acknowledging it as a reflection of his dedication and competence. Odita announced that the association will honor General Musa with the title of Grand Patron during its conference and award ceremony in October 2026, which will also include the launch of a new publication entitled “Defense Correspondents.”
In his remarks, the DECAN President reaffirmed the association’s commitment to delivering responsible and fact-based reporting on defense-related issues. He also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and combating various security threats, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. Odita called for enhanced collaboration between the Ministry of Defense and defense correspondents to promote effective engagement and ensure that the public receives timely and reliable defense information.
