Here’s the latest news you should be aware of.
Closely Contested California Gubernatorial Race Pending
The race for California’s gubernatorial primary is still in limbo, with many votes yet to be counted.
As of Wednesday morning, the NBC News Decision Desk reported that only 50% of expected votes had been tallied, making it premature to declare a winner.
Three major contenders are battling for two general election spots: former Fox News host Steve Hilton (R), former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra (D), and billionaire activist Tom Steyer (D). Leading the pack with a significant margin is Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.
With nearly half the votes counted, the candidates are running neck and neck—Hilton holds a 27% approval rating, Becerra follows closely at 26%, and Steyer has garnered 20%. Bianco remains the only other candidate above 10%, clocking in at 11%.
Additionally, several other critical elections in California are still undecided, including important battleground races and the possibility of a November runoff against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Bass is likely to advance, but it remains uncertain whether she will face Republican Spencer Pratt or Democrat Nitya Raman. Currently, Bass leads with about 37% of the vote, while Pratt and Raman are at 29% and 21%, respectively.
In San Francisco, Democratic candidates are competing to succeed retiring former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with State Sen. Scott Wiener progressing to the general election. The race for the second spot remains tight, as Pelosi supporter Connie Chung currently leads progressive activist Saikat Chakrabarti, 29% to 15%.
Skepticism Grows Among Democrats Over Jill Biden’s New Book
Advisers to President Joe Biden have long conveyed that he is still capable and ready for duty, even as visible signs of his frailty emerge. Jill Biden’s new book suggests that the portrayal of the president as an active leader may be overly optimistic.
This narrative has sparked criticism among some Democratic donors and strategists who argue that Jill Biden should have recommended her husband step down after one term to improve the party’s chances against Donald Trump in future elections.
Scott Pelley Dismissed from CBS News After Conflict
Scott Pelley, the veteran correspondent for “60 Minutes,” has been let go by CBS News following a disagreement with the new executive producer during a tense staff meeting.
In a letter obtained by NBC News, “60 Minutes” executive producer Nick Bilton acknowledged Pell’s vocal dissent regarding the future direction of the show.
During the contentious meeting, Pelley challenged Bilton about the producer’s new role, questioning his acceptance of the position under circumstances that had created a rift within the team. He expressed concerns over the dismissal of prior executive producer Tanya Simon and fellow correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
Pelley’s departure intensifies ongoing unrest at CBS, as staff members clash with Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss over the editorial direction set by the new management at Paramount Skydance, led by tech heir David Ellison.
Supreme Court Declines to Block Controversial Congressional Map in Alabama
The Supreme Court has permitted Alabama to utilize a congressional map that significantly reduces the number of majority-black districts, benefiting Republican interests.
In 2023, Alabama created a map containing only one majority-Black district, disregarding a lower court’s recommendation for two districts following findings that the prior map violated the Voting Rights Act. A lower court later accused the map of intentional discrimination against black voters.
In light of a recent Louisiana ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act, the Supreme Court has called for lower courts to reconsider the impact of partisan interests in future redistricting efforts.
The recent decision has fueled concerns that the high court has blurred its role in the political landscape, particularly given that its judgement regarding Louisiana districting had previously postponed the primaries.
Elon Musk Approaches Milestone as Possible First Trillionaire
In American political discourse, the terms “billionaires and billionaires” have become ubiquitous, with trillionaires now potentially being added to the list.
Recent developments indicate that Elon Musk is on track to become the world’s first trillionaire, particularly due to the anticipated initial public offering of his rocket company, SpaceX.
This milestone has prompted various candidates, strategists, and activists to rethink how wealth inequality is addressed in political conversations, especially as the midterm elections loom.
The implications of Musk’s ascent to this unprecedented economic status are being widely discussed as a potential shifting point in the political narrative regarding wealth distribution.
