Morocco Adjusts World Cup Squad Ahead of Opening Match
Morocco has made two last-minute changes to its World Cup squad due to injuries, with Nayef Agelud and Abdeh Ezarzouri both being removed from the initial 26-man roster just before the tournament commences against Brazil.
FIFA Confirms Squad Modifications
FIFA officially announced the adjustments on its portal, revealing that Marwane Saadane has stepped in for Agelud, while Amin Subai takes Ezarzouri’s place. The Atlas Lions had remained optimistic about the players’ potential recovery, but ultimately opted to make these changes before the deadline, which was set for 24 hours prior to Saturday’s opening match in New York.
Impact of Injuries on Key Players
Agelud, an influential center-back and a key member of the squad that advanced to the semi-finals in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, has not appeared in a match for his club, Marseille, since March 4 due to a persistent groin issue. He underwent surgery earlier this year, but his recovery faced setbacks when medical examinations in April revealed a pubic bone fracture and mild inflammation, necessitating additional treatment.
Coaching Staff Takes Precautionary Measures
Despite being named in the original squad, Agelud did not participate in Morocco’s pre-tournament friendly matches. Head coach Mohamed Ouabi emphasized earlier this month that the team would not take any risks regarding the player’s fitness.
Potential of Ezarzouri Dashed
Ezarzouri, who many anticipated could emerge as a breakout star of the tournament, suffered a setback after sustaining an injury during a collision with teammate Chadi Riyad in a friendly match against Norway, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Real Betis forward injured his right leg, and Moroccan camp officials indicated that he would be given 48 hours to demonstrate his fitness through further testing.
New Additions to the Squad
Ultimately, Ezarzouri was unable to secure a place in the World Cup lineup, paving the way for Angers wideman Soubay, who made his debut for Morocco shortly before the tournament. This change underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Moroccan national team as it prepares for the games ahead.
Ongoing Fitness Concerns for Other Players
Morocco is also monitoring the fitness of Anas Salah Eddin, Kemzuddin Talbi, and Nousser Mazraoui, who suffered a shoulder injury in the match against Norway. Despite these concerns, it appears that all three players will be available for selection in the World Cup.
Upcoming Matches for Morocco
Following their first match against Brazil, Morocco will face Scotland in Foxboro six days later and will conclude the group stage with a match against Haiti in Atlanta on June 24.
