Public Outcry Over Sowore’s Controversial Remarks
The Center for Public Integrity has raised serious concerns following a recent statement made by Omoyele Sowore, a presidential candidate from the Action Action Congress (AAC). On June 21, 2026, Sowore publicly criticized the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) regarding their “Man of the Award,” which was presented to Oluwatosin Ajayi, Secretary of the Department of State Services (DSS). Comrade Job Samuel Danfulani, Coordinator of the Center, emphasized the moral, legal, and security implications of Sowore’s remarks, labeling them unwarranted and baseless. While acknowledging Sowore’s right to critique, Danfulani urged that such expressions be made with common sense and legal consideration.
DSS Receives International Praise for Commitment to Press Freedom
In December 2025, the International Press Institute (IPI), a global association of media professionals, commended the DSS Directorate for its significant progress toward safeguarding press freedom and respecting journalists’ rights. The IPI highlighted a shift in the agency’s approach under Ajayi’s leadership, noting that it had moved away from a history of harassment and intimidation toward a more professional and communicative stance.
Positive Developments in Government-Journalist Relationships
Under Ajayi’s direction, the DSS made notable strides in fostering a cooperative relationship with the media. In April 2025, he ordered the removal of Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Center, from the DSS watch list, where he had been for over three decades. Additionally, in October, charges of cyber defamation against the online outlet Order Paper and its staff were dropped, further emphasizing the agency’s commitment to dialogue and transparency.
Recognition from Journalism Organizations
The Broadcast Organization of Nigeria (BON), representing broadcast journalists, recently conferred the title of “Friend of the Media” upon the DSS Director General. Interestingly, despite previous awards from IPI and BON going unchallenged by Sowore, he has raised objections regarding the recent accolades from the NUJ to the same figure, which appears inconsistent and puzzling.
Acknowledgment of Excellence in Leadership
At a recent security summit in Abuja, the NUJ honored Ajayi with the “Man of the Year” award for his commitment to fostering a respectful partnership between media entities and security organizations. This recognition underscores his leadership approach, which prioritizes engagement, transparency, and collaborative efforts—essential elements for enhancing national security and democratic governance.
Debate Over Journalistic Integrity
It is worth noting that Sowore’s qualifications as a journalist have been called into question. The notion that an individual lacking formal journalistic training can meaningfully critique the profession raises important ethical concerns. The Center for Public Integrity, alongside IPI, BON, and NUJ, applauds Ajayi for steering the DSS toward a governance model rooted in legality rather than self-help, a shift that is crucial for constructive political discourse.
Call for Accountability and Respect
The Center for Public Integrity urges human rights organizations to openly denounce Sowore’s provocative comments. While he is entitled to his dignity, Sowore should refrain from undermining the dignity of others. The essence of journalistic integrity demands that professionals maintain respect for one another and for the ethical standards of their field. Moreover, the Center calls on the DSS Director General to remain steadfast in his commitment to the rule of law, notwithstanding the challenges posed by Sowore’s inflammatory rhetoric.
