MTN Nigeria Enhances Data Transparency Amid Consumer Concerns
MTN Nigeria is taking significant steps to increase transparency around its data billing and network operations, addressing ongoing consumer concerns over alleged data depletion. The initiative aims to rebuild customer trust by allowing users to independently assess how their data is consumed and billed on the network.
Public Engagement Launches “Data on Trial” Initiative
At a press conference titled “Data on Trial” in Lagos, Tobe Okigbo, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, announced that the initiative will enable Nigerians to voice their concerns and investigate data consumption patterns. This move is intended to clarify whether issues stem from systemic problems, customer misconceptions, or a need for enhanced consumer education.
Past Experiences Shape Current Strategy
Okigbo reflected on MTN’s previous initiatives to address complaints regarding fraudulent value-added service applications. The company had successfully discontinued the affected services, subjected its systems to regulatory oversight, and implemented measures aimed at restoring consumer confidence.
A Call for Consumer Collaboration
The MTN executive emphasized the importance of trust in the telecommunications sector, stating that improved understanding of tariffs will encourage customers to engage more with digital services. The upcoming public engagement session will be livestreamed, enabling consumers and stakeholders nationwide to participate and raise questions.
Clarifying Data Consumption Practices
Mike Ndukwe, MTN’s General Manager of Network Quality, refuted claims that the company is withholding customer data. He explained that data consumption is initiated through activities like video streaming, web browsing, and app downloads. For example, high-definition video content on platforms such as TikTok can consume significantly more data than standard-definition options, illustrating the impact of video quality on overall data usage.
Managing Data Usage Effectively
Ndukwe advised customers to manage their data consumption by adjusting video resolution settings, restricting background applications, and monitoring device configurations. He also clarified that data usage is measured according to globally accepted standards, with a validated billing system in place to ensure accuracy across different stages of data transmission.
Challenges Impacting Network Quality
Quality of service is contingent upon the performance of multiple interconnected systems, as explained by Asura Mshelia, General Manager of Network Services. He highlighted that network congestion, power failures, equipment malfunctions, and fiber cuts can adversely affect service quality. Notably, vandalism has posed significant challenges, with MTN experiencing numerous attacks on its communications infrastructure, including the theft of essential equipment.
Community Responsibility in Protecting Infrastructure
Mshelia urged Nigerians to take an active role in safeguarding communications infrastructure, stressing that attacks on network facilities result in widespread service disruptions affecting many subscribers. The initiative is designed to improve transparency, address consumer concerns, and ultimately strengthen the trust between telecommunications providers and their customers.
