MTN Nigeria Commits to Major Network Expansion Amid Consumer Concerns
MTN Nigeria has announced an ambitious investment of NOK 1 trillion for network expansion this year, alongside the introduction of new tools designed to help users monitor their mobile data usage. This initiative comes in response to mounting complaints about poor service quality and rapid data depletion among subscribers.
Engagement Forum Addresses Subscriber Concerns
The commitment was unveiled during a stakeholder engagement forum titled ‘Data on Trial,’ which took place in Lagos. Senior executives from MTN, including CEO Carl Toriola and Chief Technology Officer Yahaya Ibrahim, engaged with journalists, digital creators, influencers, and customers, addressing critical issues surrounding network performance, data consumption, and pricing.
Data Usage Transparency Initiatives
During the forum, a primary focus was the longstanding issue of data bundles depleting faster than expected. To address these concerns, MTN announced plans to launch a self-service data usage portal within the MTN app by the end of this month. This platform will enable subscribers to monitor their data consumption across various applications and devices.
Understanding Data Consumption
According to Ugongwa Nwoye, Chief Customer Relations and Experience Officer, the new portal will act as a data “black box,” allowing users to see which applications are consuming the most bandwidth. This will also help identify background activities that may be draining their data subscriptions.
Impact of Modern Technology on Data Use
MTN executives emphasized that modern smartphones and applications, combined with user behavior, significantly influence data consumption. Toriola illustrated this with examples from within MTN, highlighting instances where executives were surprised to discover automatic app backups consuming vast amounts of data without their knowledge.
Network Challenges and Investment Plans
Despite the planned investment, there remain widespread concerns regarding network quality, particularly in light of recent price adjustments. Ibrahim acknowledged these challenges and apologized for the unsatisfactory user experience. He underscored that improving network quality is MTN’s top priority, emphasizing the need for continued capital investment to maintain and expand the telecommunications infrastructure.
Infrastructure and Operational Hurdles
Industry analysts recognize that MTN’s planned expenditures reflect the urgent need to meet Nigeria’s increasing data demand. Even with substantial investments, Triola pointed out that carriers face persistent environmental and operational challenges, including vandalism and regulatory hurdles. He noted a recent incident in Lagos that resulted in significant service disruptions due to fires and construction damages affecting fiber optics.
Future of Mobile Data and Subscriber Responsiveness
The discussion at the forum also touched on the topic of unlimited mobile data plans, which MTN executives clarified are not feasible given the limited spectrum resources. Instead, the company plans to expand its FibreX broadband network to provide customers with high-capacity connections that support more data-heavy activities such as streaming and gaming. As Nigeria’s digital landscape continues to evolve, MTN’s initiatives aim to bridge the information gap and enhance subscriber trust in the company’s commitment to service quality.
