NAHCON Initiates Diplomatic Efforts to Boost Nigeria’s Hajj Quota
Ahead of the 2027 Hajj season, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is taking proactive measures to restore Nigeria’s Hajj quota to 95,000 pilgrims. This initiative aims to ensure that all Nigerians wishing to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage can do so.
Comprehensive Reform Agenda Unveiled
NAHCON has introduced a comprehensive reform agenda designed to enhance planning, improve service delivery, and increase stakeholder participation in the pilgrimage process. Alhaji Alidu Shuti, the Managing Director of the Commission, shared these insights during a recent stakeholder summit in Abuja.
Efforts to Reverse Quota Reductions
Shuti emphasized that NAHCON is committed to collaborating with Saudi authorities to reverse the recent reduction in Nigeria’s pilgrimage slots. The upcoming 2026 Hajj, for example, is expected to accommodate around 50,000 pilgrims, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue.
Proactive Planning for Pilgrimage Logistics
To facilitate a smoother Hajj experience, Shuti stated that the Commission will initiate early coordination efforts with Saudi officials to expedite the approval of flight schedules. He noted that NAHCON will no longer seek extensions of the deadlines set by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
Strengthening Accountability and Operational Guidelines
In a bid to enhance operational integrity, the Commission plans to review its guidelines and contracts with service providers. This will involve withholding payments from contractors until their performance has been evaluated post-Hajj, thereby ensuring accountability and transparency.
Direct Engagement with Accommodation Providers
Additionally, NAHCON is looking to engage directly with hotel owners in Madinah, aiming to eliminate middlemen from the process. The focus will be on large accommodation facilities capable of hosting at least 500 pilgrims, which will streamline coordination efforts significantly.
Enhancing Services and Training
The Commission also aims to enhance its capacity-building initiatives by offering training and retraining programs for Hajj managers at various levels. To improve catering services, NAHCON plans to encourage partnerships with local Nigerian chefs to accommodate the dietary needs of pilgrims effectively.
Call for Increased Transparency and Stakeholder Engagement
During the summit, members of the Hajj and Umrah Operators Association of Nigeria (AHUON) urged for greater transparency in the allocation of Hajj slots. They recommended involving tour operators in selecting service providers in Saudi Arabia and advocated for improved education programs for pilgrims, enhanced medical service access, and better coordination of air transport logistics.
Furthermore, the State Pilgrim Welfare Board Forum proposed a standardized pilgrim education module to ensure that all aspiring pilgrims across Nigeria receive consistent orientation prior to their departure. Stakeholders remain optimistic that implementing these reforms will make significant improvements to Hajj management in Nigeria and elevate the overall pilgrimage experience leading up to 2027.
