Labor Party in Nasarawa State Distributes Free Nomination Forms
The Nasarawa state chapter of the Labor Party, aligned with the Julius Habre faction, has commenced the distribution of free expressions of interest and nomination forms to its members and aspirants. This initiative aims to support candidates seeking various elective positions in the upcoming elections.
Forms Available for Various Positions
The available forms include those for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assembly positions. This move is seen as a vital step to encourage participation in the democratic process, especially amid the prevailing economic challenges faced by many citizens.
Party Chairman Highlights Political Inclusivity
During a press conference at the party’s secretariat in Lafia, Alexander Ombugu, the chairman of the state Labor Party, announced the initiative. He expressed that the decision to offer free nomination forms is part of the party’s strategy to alleviate economic strain on applicants while promoting inclusive political participation.
Emphasis on Credibility Ahead of Elections
Ombugu, serving as the bona fide chair of the LP, emphasized the importance of fielding candidates for the upcoming 2027 general elections, irrespective of the ongoing leadership disputes within the party. He stated, “We are dedicated to implementing the directives from the national leadership and are determined to present these forms free of charge to all interested candidates.”
Timing and Process for Primaries Announced
The party plans to conduct its primaries from May 27 to May 29 and is committed to ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process. Specifics include gubernatorial and state assembly primaries set for May 27, followed by Senate and House primaries on May 29, ensuring a well-structured selection of candidates.
By-Election Set Following Senator’s Passing
The Labor Party also has its sights set on a by-election for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, scheduled for June 20, 2026. In light of the recent passing of Senator Godiya Akwasiki, Ombugu announced that the party’s primary election to select its candidate will take place on May 25, shortly before this critical election date.
Focus on Employment and Security in Campaign Promises
Ibrahim Afaka, the Labor Party’s gubernatorial candidate from the Nasarawa Local Council, has pledged to tackle unemployment and insecurity if elected. He criticized the current administration led by the All Progressives Congress, emphasizing his commitment to effect meaningful change rather than seeking personal gain through political office.
Internal Divisions Persist Amid Preparations for 2027 Elections
Despite ongoing internal disputes between the factions led by Julius Habre and former finance minister Senator Nenadi Ousmane, both factions remain active in their campaign efforts as they prepare for the 2027 elections. The commitment to political activities reflects the determination of Labor Party members to overcome challenges and rally support from constituents nationwide.
