Entrepreneur Deborah Adejoy Reflects on a Life-Altering Accident
Deborah Adejoy, a resilient entrepreneur, shares her harrowing experience with Temitope Adetunji, detailing how she survived a life-threatening accident that nearly led to the amputation of her leg. Her journey encompasses immense pain, significant lessons, and an arduous recovery process.
A Promising Path Toward Independence
Originally from Epe, Lagos, Deborah is not only a student at Tai Solarin University of Education but also a budding entrepreneur focused on achieving financial independence through her clothing business. Her determination to succeed was clear even before her accident, as she balanced her responsibilities as a salesgirl at a gas station while pursuing computer studies at a vocational center.
A Fateful Day in 2019
In 2019, while preparing for her JAMB exam, Deborah’s life took a tragic turn. On the morning of her accident, she was en route to refill her gas cylinder before attending her computer training class. Unfortunately, a seemingly ordinary day transformed into a critical moment of her life.
The Impact of the Accident
Riding a commercial motorcycle, Deborah faced disaster when the rider accelerated to overtake a trailer. The details of the crash remain hazy, but she later learned that she was ejected from the motorcycle, and the heavy gas cylinder she carried landed on her leg, causing devastating injuries. Losing consciousness, she experienced a terrifying blur before awakening in a hospital bed, grappling with confusion, fear, and excruciating pain.
Facing the Threat of Amputation
As she lay in the hospital, Deborah overheard doctors discussing the severity of her condition, revealing that amputation might be necessary due to the extent of her injuries. The emotional weight of that news shattered her spirit, especially when she sought comfort from her boyfriend, only to be met with indifference. This moment heightened her sense of isolation and despair during an already challenging time.
Family Support and Treatment Choices
Deborah’s family reacted with profound concern; her mother was devastated, while her father adamantly refused to accept amputation. Choosing a different path, he arranged for her to receive treatment at the Orthopedic Chinese Medicine Clinic. Over the next six months, Deborah committed herself to an arduous recovery journey, striving to regain her ability to walk.
Resilience Through Adversity
The road to recovery was fraught with challenges. Deborah faced not only physical pain but also psychological hurdles that tested her resolve. Despite moments of despair and a setback when her leg broke again, she found strength in her family’s unwavering support. “I wanted to survive for them,” she remarked, highlighting how their love fueled her determination.
Education and New Beginnings
The aftermath of the accident disrupted Deborah’s education, necessitating careful navigation of her healing process. Nevertheless, she persevered and, in 2020, sat for the UTME, leading her to Michael Otedola College of Primary Education. This paved the way for her current studies in Entrepreneurship Education at Tai Solarin University of Education. Today, she embodies resilience, recognizing her journey as one of strength and hope.
A Message of Hope
Reflecting on her experiences, Deborah emphasizes the importance of perseverance during tough times. She encourages those facing hardship to maintain faith in themselves, asserting that change is possible. “Keep fighting, keep believing, keep moving forward,” she advises, a testament to her own remarkable journey from adversity to empowerment.
