Major Drug Bust at Lagos Airport Uncovers Significant Cocaine Shipment
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 38-year-old businessman attempting to smuggle cocaine valued at NOK 12.3 billion from Lagos to China. This arrest took place at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, where the suspect was planning to board a Qatar Airways flight to Beijing with 7.5 kg of cocaine concealed in her luggage.
Details of the Arrest
The woman, identified as Iwebema Ogechi Peace, was detained in the departure hall of Terminal 2 by NDLEA operatives. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Media and Advocacy Director-General, stated that the arrest followed credible intelligence, prompting officials to search her suitcase. Upon inspection, they discovered four large packages of cocaine expertly hidden in a false bottom of the bag.
Methodology and Background of Smuggling Operations
Babafemi revealed that the suspect claimed to frequently travel to China to purchase goods for resale in Nigeria. This incident underscores a broader pattern of international drug trafficking being closely monitored by the NDLEA.
Significant Cannabis Seizure at Apapa Port
In an unrelated but notable operation, NDLEA agents, in collaboration with other security forces, detected a massive shipment of cannabis known as Canadian Loud. Weighing 4,959 kilograms, this illicit cargo was hidden in a 40-foot container that also held vehicles being transported through the Apapa port. The shipment, valued at NOK 12.397 billion, was under surveillance for over four weeks before reaching Nigeria.
Tracking the Shipment Path
Babafemi detailed the shipment’s journey, revealing that it originated in Toronto, Canada, where it was trucked before arriving in Montreal by train and then shipped to Morocco. The comprehensive tracking system of the NDLEA enabled the successful interception of this significant haul upon its entry into Nigeria.
Disruption of Drug Trafficking Networks
The NDLEA also announced the dismantling of a drug syndicate that allegedly placed illicit substances in the luggage of unsuspecting travelers. Operations commenced after a bus carrying passengers from Nnewi in Anambra State was intercepted. A package containing 467.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine was discovered in one passenger’s belongings, raising concerns about the prevalence of embedded trafficking techniques.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Drug Smuggling
In additional arrests, NDLEA agents apprehended 57-year-old Ikechukwu Uwakwe in Lagos with 209.5 kg of Scottish Loud that was destined for Enugu State. Also, two Beninese nationals were arrested, and over half a million tramadol tablets were recovered hidden within a truck. Throughout multiple operations, the NDLEA continues to tackle drug trafficking, reinforcing its commitment to public safety.
Community Engagement and Prevention Campaigns
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA remains proactive in its War on Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, conducting sensitization programs in various communities and schools across multiple states, including Yobe, Lagos, Kano, Kogi, and Enugu. Babafemi noted that the agency’s Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retired), praised the efforts of those involved in these critical operations, highlighting the importance of combining enforcement with community awareness to effectively combat drug trafficking nationwide.
