Nigeria Education Loan Fund Takes Legal Action Against Institutions for Withholding Refunds
The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced legal action against several tertiary institutions accused of unlawfully withholding refunds owed to students under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme. This move aims to ensure compliance from the implicated schools as well as relevant educational authorities.
In a public notice released on Monday, NELFUND condemned reports of arbitrary tuition increases and rising facility fees, emphasizing that these practices contradict the fundamental objectives of the student loan program.
The Fund expressed concern over instances where institutions either delayed or altogether refused refunds to students who had already paid their tuition fees before NELFUND subsequently covered those expenses on their behalf. NELFUND highlighted these issues in its statement, reflecting the distress of affected students.
According to NELFUND, the student loan system is designed to eliminate financial obstacles to higher education and should not create additional burdens for students. The foundation pointed out that the scheme, a key initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is aimed at easing access to education, not complicating it.
To address these challenges, NELFUND has initiated collaborative efforts with the implicated institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that all eligible students promptly receive their refunds. It asserts that fees charged by institutions should remain fair and in alignment with the intentions of the loan scheme.
Reinforcing its commitment to uphold the rights of students, NELFUND emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in this innovative national intervention. The foundation reiterated that it is dedicated to safeguarding the interests of students and ensuring the scheme’s integrity remains intact.
The action taken comes in response to a surge in complaints from beneficiaries of the student loan program who reported that certain higher education institutions failed to refund previously paid tuition fees after NELFUND addressed their financial obligations directly. Students have also raised issues about delays in refund processing, even after confirming receipt of payments by the institutions.
The Student Loan Scheme, the flagship education financing initiative under President Bola Tinubu, was introduced to facilitate greater access to tertiary education by providing interest-free loans to eligible students enrolled in public educational institutions. Under this program, NELFUND directly covers tuition fees while approved maintenance fees are deposited into the students’ bank accounts.
Since the program’s rollout, NELFUND has consistently communicated to institutions that students who paid tuition prior to the Fund’s intervention are entitled to full refunds when the Fund pays on their behalf. The notice issued on Monday signifies a more stringent enforcement approach by authorities determined to prevent abuses that could erode trust in this vital program.
