New Jersey Governor Urges Federal Officials to Address Detention Center Tensions
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has called on federal immigration enforcement officials at the Newark detention center to reduce tensions amid escalating protests. She emphasized the importance of acting humanely while also urging demonstrators to maintain peaceful protests outside the facility.
Governor’s Response Following Reports of Poor Conditions
The governor’s announcement on Friday follows several days of unrest outside the Delaney Hall facility. Allegations of inadequate conditions and excessive force against detainees have circulated, which the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) vehemently denies. The unrest resulted in the arrest of nine protesters on Thursday.
Creation of a Safe Protest Area
In light of safety concerns, particularly after violent protests in Minneapolis earlier this year, Governor Sherrill announced plans to establish a designated area for peaceful protests outside Delaney Hall. This decision underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring that public safety is prioritized during demonstrations.
Concerns Over Treatment of Detainees
Sherrill expressed her concerns at a news conference, citing reports of dangerous, inhumane, and unconstitutional conditions at the facility. “We have seen increased violence, arrests, pepper spraying, and public intimidation by the Trump administration at Delaney Hall,” she noted, emphasizing an urgent need for accountability.
Calls for Closure of the Facility
Reiterating her prior stance, the governor insisted on the closure of Delaney Hall. She highlighted that both she and others had been denied entry to the facility for several days, raising serious questions about what officials may be attempting to conceal from the public.
Protests and Hunger Strikes Persist
Protesters resumed their demonstrations at the facility on Friday, while a counter-protest organized by pro-ICE supporters is scheduled for Saturday. Advocacy groups and families of detainees report that some individuals at Delaney Hall have initiated a hunger strike due to claims of spoiled food and inadequate medical care. Detainees allege mistreatment, including instances of being pepper-sprayed and physically assaulted.
Federal and Private Agency Responses
In response to the ongoing allegations, DHS and GEO Group— the private company operating the facility—have firmly contested claims of substandard treatment. They assert that detainees receive appropriate care, conducted within the framework of established operational standards. Following the protests, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin clarified that law enforcement faced physical aggression from demonstrators, asserting criminal activity on their part.
Serious Allegations of Inadequate Care Documented
Concerns over food quality within the facility have led to significant complaints from detainees, with allegations of expired or contaminated meals prompting hunger strikes. Attorneys representing the detainees allege that some individuals have been retaliated against through solitary confinement or transfer to other facilities. While DHS maintains that inspections ensure compliance with national detention standards, advocates continue to call for greater transparency and immediate reform within the system.
