New Mexico Lawmakers Investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s Activities
New Mexico lawmakers announced on Monday that they are initiating a comprehensive investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s actions within the state. The effort aims to reveal the full extent of Epstein’s conduct and determine if any other individuals should face charges related to his alleged crimes.
Truth Commission Issues Subpoenas
The New Mexico Truth Commission plans to issue subpoenas to 14 entities this week. These include federal agencies that have previously investigated Epstein, such as the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI. State and local law enforcement agencies that engaged in similar inquiries are also on the list, along with Epstein’s former banking institutions, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase & Co. Additionally, the Santa Fe Institute, a nonprofit that received support from Epstein, is expected to have its records examined.
Possible Legal Actions Based on Findings
Should the commission discover evidence of indictable crimes, it will refer cases to the appropriate law enforcement agencies in New Mexico or beyond. This move underscores the commission’s commitment to reaching a potential legal outcome from its findings.
Documenting the Truth: A Public Record
The commission aims to construct a thoroughly documented public record. Republican state Representative Andrea Reeve emphasized during a recent meeting at the New Mexico State Capitol that the investigation will focus on uncovering the truth about what transpired and identifying those responsible. She noted the importance of considering the evidence that survivors have the right to know and that the law compels.
Coordination with State Authorities
The commission is collaborating with the state Department of Justice, which has reopened a criminal investigation that had been closed in 2019 at the behest of New York federal prosecutors. The agency is also pursuing Epstein-related records from federal authorities, further intensifying the scrutiny on Epstein’s activities.
Allegations and Historical Context
Epstein purchased a ranch near Santa Fe in 1993, frequently visiting the property, yet he was never charged in New Mexico despite persistent allegations of sex crimes spanning decades. An NBC News review has revealed that at least ten women have alleged instances of grooming and abuse at his expansive ranch, with reports dating back to the mid-1990s. Alarmingly, half of these victims were teenagers at the time of their victimization, and until recently, no law enforcement agency had conducted a search of the ranch.
Systematic Oversights and Future Directions
The failures to address Epstein’s actions in New Mexico reflect a broader pattern of oversight, beginning with an investigation in Florida where he was accused of soliciting underage girls. In 2008, he secured a controversial plea deal, evading significant prison time and quashing further investigations in several states, including New Mexico. Following Epstein’s death in prison, focus shifted to his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, whose trial briefly touched on New Mexico-related charges. The release of millions of documents by the Justice Department in January shed light on new allegations while revealing disturbing claims of potential bodies buried on the property, reigniting interest in the investigation.
Individual Stories Highlighting Systemic Issues
During a recent committee meeting, members highlighted the importance of centering their investigation around the experiences of survivors. Democratic state Representative Marianna Anaya indicated her focus on probing possible “medical and scientific crimes,” as well as issues of sex trafficking and financial misconduct. Furthermore, the commission, funded through settlements with Epstein’s banks, aims to propose revisions to state law to address the regulatory gaps that had allowed Epstein and others to escape accountability.
Testimonies from Survivors
The committee has heard harrowing testimonies from survivors, including Rachel Benavidez, who alleged she was abused by Epstein while working as a certified masseuse at his ranch. The family of Virginia Giuffre, a prominent victim who tragically died by suicide last year, also shared their insights. Benavidez emphatically stated, “We know that Jeffrey Epstein could not have acted alone,” highlighting the extensive network that supported Epstein’s illicit activities, which she asserted permeated academia, science, medicine, politics, finance, and government.
