Neymar Addresses Controversial Training Ground Incident
Neymar has publicly apologized for his recent altercation with teammate Robinho Junior during a training session, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and its impact on both players and the club.
In a match on Tuesday where Santos drew 1-1 with Deportivo Recoleta, Neymar managed to score and subsequently celebrated by embracing Robinho Jr. on the sidelines. Following the game, he addressed the media, asserting, “If Robinho Junior’s entourage wants to apologize to the press, they will do it here.”
The veteran forward admitted his reaction during the incident was disproportionate, saying, “I had already extended my apology to him and his family. Yes, I overreacted. I could have approached things differently, but I lost my temper.” He elaborated, “Everyone makes mistakes. Mine was significant, as was his, and we came together to resolve it. On Monday, I apologized in front of the entire team, and Robinho did the same. I believed we had settled our differences.”
The situation escalated when Santos initiated an investigation following Neymar’s claim that Robinho Jr. had physically assaulted him during practice after dribbling past him. Robinho Jr. described the incident as a “moment of extreme anger” while he was with his agent and subsequently accused Neymar of “hurling offensive insults,” tripping him, and delivering a “violent slap in the face.”
Robinho Jr., the son of former Real Madrid and Manchester City player Robinho, confirmed, “That’s what happened—a slap in the face.” However, he also noted that Neymar quickly recognized the severity of his actions and offered multiple apologies, which he accepted. “I have already said that I accept his apology,” he stated.
The 18-year-old player refuted any suggestions that his response stemmed from a desire to leave Santos. “It was a very upsetting situation because Neymar has been my idol since childhood. Outside opinions often misconstrue reality, and it’s disheartening to witness this escalation. I am committed to Santos, which is why I renewed my contract. I am eager to contribute to the club,” he emphasized.
Neymar expressed concern that the incident has been sensationalized, stating, “Especially here in Brazil, my name is mentioned daily. Everyone involved in football knows that conflicts occur—whether it’s fights, punches, or slaps; that’s part of the game. Unfortunately, misunderstandings can lead to disproportionate reactions.” He further explained that such episodes are often misinterpreted by those not directly involved.
The fallout from the altercation has attracted attention, leading Santos coach Cuca to express regret regarding the negative publicity surrounding the team. He remarked, “The situation was not ideal and could have been avoided. This is not a normal occurrence in football, and the truth is that everyone involved suffers consequences.” Cuca emphasized how damaging this incident has been for Santos, noting that the fans deserve a focus on wins and positive performances rather than negative headlines.
Currently, Santos finds itself on a troubling streak, remaining winless in their last seven matches across all competitions, a situation that further complicates matters for a club eager to regain its competitive edge.
