Nigerian Government Launches BRIDGE Project to Enhance Police Connectivity
The Nigerian government has unveiled an initiative aimed at transforming police stations throughout the nation into digital connectivity hubs. This endeavor, known as Project BRIDGE, seeks to modernize the Nigeria Police Force by leveraging improved connectivity.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made the announcement following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between his ministry and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
Revolutionizing Police Stations into Connectivity Hubs
According to Tijani, this initiative will enable police stations to function as central nodes in the nationwide Project BRIDGE network. He emphasized the importance of this development for enhancing the capabilities of the police force.
Expanding Nigeria’s Fiber Backbone
Project BRIDGE aims to significantly boost nationwide connectivity by extending Nigeria’s national fiber optic backbone from approximately 30,000 kilometers to 120,000 kilometers. This ambitious project aims to connect all 774 local government areas across the country.
Beyond enhancing police operations, the initiative strives to benefit various sectors including education, healthcare, and agriculture by providing high-speed broadband access. It also plans to establish cross-border links with neighboring countries, including Benin, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.
Enhancing Police Operations through Technology
Tijani stated that the project would not only improve service delivery but also accelerate the digital transformation of the Nigeria Police Force. He highlighted recent discussions with Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu and Executive Director of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Shaidu, about how police stations can effectively become part of the national network.
As part of this collaboration, Tijani mentioned a live demonstration of an innovative AI-powered voice-enabled local language statement capture and case management solution developed by Awari. This technology aims to streamline the investigative process by allowing law enforcement agencies to capture statements and manage cases in local languages efficiently.
Anticipated Rollout in Major Cities
The Minister expressed optimism about the upcoming rollout of the initiative, slated to begin in Abuja and Lagos in the coming weeks, with plans for subsequent expansion throughout the country. He reiterated the importance of building a digital infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s future endeavors.
Tijani encouraged public sector organizations to embrace new digital technologies to enhance service delivery, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for citizens across Nigeria.
