Nigerian Navy Intensifies Efforts Against Crude Oil Theft
The Nigerian Navy has ramped up its crackdown on crude oil theft and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta, successfully recovering substantial quantities of illegally refined petroleum products concealed in remote forested areas of Rivers State. This action is part of the ongoing Operation Delta Sentinel.
Recent Successful Interceptions
This operation follows a recent interception by personnel at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lekki, where an estimated 1,800 liters of suspected stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were seized during an intelligence-driven raid targeting illicit oil activities in Lagos State’s Ibeju-Lekki region.
Anti-Smuggling Operations Yield Results
In a related incident, officials from FOB Badagry also confiscated 130 bags of foreign parboiled rice during an anti-smuggling operation along the Badagry waterway. These seizures highlight the Navy’s commitment to curbing illegal activities within its jurisdiction.
Operation Delta Sentinel Achievements
Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Intelligence, confirmed that operatives of Operation Delta Sentinel recovered approximately 1,600 liters of suspected illegally refined AGO in Rivers State. This ongoing initiative seeks to dismantle networks involved in oil theft and illegal refining.
Intelligence-Led Operations
Following credible intelligence regarding the movement of illegal petroleum products in the Okoromado community, which borders Ogbia Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Solo deployed a Counter Crude Theft (COT) team to the area. Utilizing aerial surveillance technology, they identified multiple bags believed to contain the illegally refined AGO, hidden beneath vegetation in the Orasi forest.
Operational Outcomes and Procedures
Subsequent exploration of the site resulted in the recovery of 16 bags, each containing approximately 100 liters of the illicit product, bringing the total to around 1,600 liters. While the suspects fled upon sighting naval forces, no arrests were made during the operation. The confiscated product has since been processed in accordance with established operational protocols.
Commitment to Maritime Security
Captain Folorunsho emphasized the Navy’s unwavering resolve to confront oil theft and economic sabotage. He stated that there remains “no safe haven” for individuals engaged in such illicit activities, with relentless operations aimed at ensuring these criminal elements are pursued across waterways and adjacent streams nationwide.
