NNPC Delivers Advanced MRI System to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has successfully installed a cutting-edge 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State. This state-of-the-art facility aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities and patient care across the region.
Impact on Healthcare in Southeast Nigeria
The handover ceremony took place on Friday at the Igwe Orizu ICT Center on the NAUTH campus. Bashir Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, emphasized that the installation of the MRI machine will not only serve the residents of Anambra but will also provide benefits to the entire South-East region.
Enhancing Diagnostic Infrastructure
Ojulari noted that the MRI system’s installation is part of a broader initiative by the NNPC Foundation to bolster tertiary healthcare and support early diagnosis through significant infrastructure investments. He pointed out that, “Today marks a milestone as NNPC Limited commissions equipment essential to optimal healthcare delivery in Nigeria. This project aligns with NAUTH’s objectives to modernize its diagnostic services.”
Commitment to Social Responsibility
According to Ojulari, the placement of the 1.5 Tesla GE MRI systems in public health institutions reflects NNPC’s commitment to corporate social responsibility while managing the vast oil and gas resources entrusted to them by over 200 million Nigerians. His remarks underscored that NNPC is dedicated not only to energy investments but also to impactful social contributions.
Addressing Healthcare Challenges
Despite the benefits, Ojulari acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare sector, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and insufficient funding. He expressed that NNPC’s intervention at NAUTH aims to alleviate the healthcare burden on both patients and medical professionals.
Long-term Benefits for the Region
He concluded that the installed MRI system is set to significantly improve access to essential healthcare services, thereby easing the financial and logistical burdens faced by patients seeking treatment at distant facilities. The initiative is expected to positively impact thousands of lives across Anambra State and the entire South-East geopolitical zone.
Support from NAUTH Leadership
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Joe Ugboaja, Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, commended the NNPC Foundation for its humanitarian efforts. He stated that the new MRI system would enhance the quality of health services for residents in the region and expressed confidence in the NNPC Foundation’s commitment to sustainable healthcare solutions.
Expert Insights on Healthcare Access
Lady Emanuela Alukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Limited/GTE, highlighted the vital role that this MRI system will play in providing high-quality healthcare to underserved communities. She referenced the Nigeria Health Watch report, which indicates that over 250,000 Nigerians die annually due to inadequate healthcare access, emphasizing the pressing need for such investments in medical technology.
Acknowledgment of Collaborative Efforts
The event saw participation from various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, representatives from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike. Alukwe expressed gratitude towards all involved in the project’s realization, underscoring the importance of a collaborative approach to improving healthcare outcomes in Nigeria.
