Nigeria Revenue Service Commends Presidential Reforms
Zac Adedeji, the Director-General of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), has praised President Bola Tinubu for his impactful reforms, which he believes have led to a significant transformation of the nation’s economic and financial landscape. Adedeji spoke at the inauguration of the agency’s new three-tower headquarters in Abuja, emphasizing the positive effects of the reforms on domestic revenue generation.
Record Revenue Performance Achieved
During his address, Adedeji noted that Nigeria has recently achieved record domestic revenue figures, thanks to a disciplined reform strategy. He stated, “His Excellency has restored macroeconomic credibility, unified the foreign exchange market, cleared longstanding arrears, and re-established confidence in Nigeria’s ability to operate a transparent and market-driven system.” He acknowledged that these crucial decisions were met with challenges but insisted they would be recognized positively in the annals of history.
NRS’s Key Role in Revenue Growth Initiatives
The NRS, led by Adedeji—who was appointed by President Tinubu shortly after he took office—plays a pivotal role in the administration’s aggressive push to enhance revenue generation and align fiscal with monetary policies. The commitment to bolstering the economy is evident as the NRS aims to significantly increase collections over the coming years.
Impressive Revenue Collections Marks Recent Success
In 2024, the NRS reported a remarkable 76% increase in revenue collections, reaching N21.6 trillion. This record was eclipsed the following year, with total revenue climbing to N28.2 trillion. Looking ahead, the agency has set an ambitious target of N40.7 trillion for 2026, fueled by optimism stemming from the recent implementation of a new tax system in Nigeria.
Significant Tax System Overhaul Introduced
The revision of Nigeria’s tax infrastructure, highlighted by Adedeji in his remarks, is recognized as the most substantial reform since the colonial era. This overhaul has consolidated over 60 outdated tax laws into a streamlined framework designed to enhance compliance, administrative efficiency, and predictability. The new tax structure is expected to align more closely with global best practices.
Leadership’s Role in Economic Recovery
Adedeji emphasized the importance of leadership in rapidly rebuilding an economy previously hindered by limited fiscal space, low investor confidence, and various structural challenges. He noted, “Tax reform is not necessarily elegant at first; it is technical, contentious, and requires sustained coordination between institutions. It requires discipline, patience, and resilience.” His comments underscored that the determination shown by the government has made once-daunting challenges manageable.
Acknowledgment of Contributions to Fiscal Reforms
In his speech, Adedeji recognized the significant contributions of Taiwo Oyedele, who led the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform and currently serves as the Permanent Minister of Finance. The NRS’s new 16-story headquarters is designed to support approximately 3,000 employees, further solidifying its capacity to drive Nigeria’s fiscal initiatives.
