Response to Criticism Over Calls for Resignation
The Peter Obi Media Room (POMR) has addressed criticisms stemming from the Presidency regarding Labor presidential candidate Peter Obi’s call for President Bola Tinubu to resign due to the government’s failure to enhance living conditions for Nigerians.
Presidential Palace Defends Leadership Amid Criticism
On Monday, the presidential palace issued a statement through Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, branding Obi’s remarks on X as “childish” and “a diversion.” The statement accused the former Anambra State governor of presenting a selective and distorted perspective on Nigeria’s situation.
POMR Criticizes President’s Response to Governance Concerns
In a pointed counter-statement released on Tuesday, the Obi Media Group asserted that the administration failed to engage meaningfully with Obi’s concerns, instead choosing to spotlight secondary issues. The group’s spokesperson, Idris Zekele Jr., stated, “Rather than address leadership and accountability concerns, the president has embarked on a shadow chase, discussing weekend sham elections and the structure of government versus presidential or Congressional formats.”
Historical Context of Leadership Accountability
POMR highlighted that Nigeria has operated under the same presidential system that Tinubu previously criticized during his calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s resignation. The media room emphasized that Obi’s call to the president was not merely a political maneuver, but rather an appeal for accountability and responsible leadership. “Our Principal’s comments were about the fundamental principle of leadership: accepting responsibility for results,” Zekele added.
Addressing Issues of Poverty and Economic Hardship
POMR contended that Obi’s statements reflect the broader economic struggles facing Nigerians, noting a significant rise in poverty levels under the current administration. “In the past three years, we have witnessed unprecedented economic hardship, with poverty rates soaring from about 87 million to around 140 million,” the group stated. They criticized the disconnect between macroeconomic indicators and the realities experienced by ordinary citizens, asserting that measures of economic success should center on improvements in people’s lives, not merely statistical growth.
Concerns Over Security and Governance
On security matters, POMR accused the government of glossing over widespread challenges in favor of emphasizing isolated successes. “While recognizing certain operational successes, the president ignores the sobering reality that insecurity has escalated,” they asserted. The statement called for greater honesty about the security landscape, stressing that leadership should address challenges transparently rather than celebrating isolated victories.
Electoral Integrity and National Priorities Under Scrutiny
POMR also refuted the notion that recent election results reflect public support for the current administration. They expressed alarm over electoral irregularities and questioned misplaced national priorities, highlighting the disproportionate funding allocated to elections compared to essential services like healthcare. “This pattern demands urgent reflection on our national focus,” the group observed, reiterating that Obi’s remarks aimed to inspire a shift towards a leadership culture that prioritizes public trust and accountability.
Call for Responsible Governance
The statement underscored a need for the government to redirect its efforts toward addressing pressing issues such as insecurity, poverty, and unemployment. “Nigeria deserves leadership that listens, serves, and accepts responsibility,” POMR concluded, stressing that the country is at a critical juncture that requires a commitment to constructive governance aimed at fostering unity and prosperity.
