Renaissance Africa Energy Launches Projects in Oil Spill-Affected Communities
Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has initiated six significant projects aimed at supporting communities in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, that have been adversely affected by oil spills.
Community Infrastructure Developments Underway
Among the initiatives is the construction of 12 classroom blocks in Agbonchia, along with a new 200-seat town hall in Akpajo. The community secondary school in Areto is also undergoing an ICT upgrade, which includes improvements to the backup power supply and other renovations.
Infrastructure Enhancements and Environmental Recovery Efforts
Additionally, the company is undertaking the desilting of a four-kilometer drainage system in Areto and is implementing power enhancements, including the installation of prepaid meters in both Areto and Okerewa communities.
A Human-Centered Approach
During an event held on Friday in Agbonchia, Igo Weli, Vice President of Relations and Sustainable Development at Renaissance Africa, emphasized that the project reflects a human-centered approach. He noted that these initiatives stemmed from discussions with the Eleme community following the oil spill on the Nkpoku Bomu pipeline, a site previously managed by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).
Progress in Environmental Remediation
Weli highlighted that following the oil spill on June 11, 2023, Renaissance Africa adopted a new strategy focused on collaboration, which he believes is distinct from past efforts in the region. This strategic shift has led to effective pipeline repairs and the successful recovery of spilled oil. He added that ongoing cleanup efforts in the affected communities have now entered the implementation phase, signaling substantial progress in environmental remediation endeavors.
Commitment to Community Partnerships
Since acquiring SPDC, Renaissance Africa has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Areto community, promising a goodwill grant to support various development projects. Weli underscored the company’s commitment to forging partnerships that enhance the living standards of host communities. He noted that while several construction projects have already been completed, two electrification projects remain in various stages of progress.
Calls for Continued Support and Improvement
Rivers State Education Commissioner Peters Nwagor, who was represented at the event, praised Renaissance Africa’s investments, expressing confidence that these initiatives will benefit current and future generations. He urged both school authorities and local residents to safeguard the newly built facilities to maximize their impact.
Local Leaders Advocate for Further Collaboration
Obariromate Irolu, Chairman of the Eleme Local Government Area, also commended Renaissance’s contributions to local development, emphasizing the potential of these projects to enhance living standards and drive socio-economic growth. He called on other companies operating in Eleme to emulate Renaissance’s example, particularly in areas such as community security.
Community Leaders Seek Additional Support
Mr. Philip Obele, the Supreme Ruler of Eleme, remarked that the ongoing projects signify a positive shift away from SPDC’s management and foster improved relationships under Renaissance’s stewardship. He urged the company to assist in providing clean drinking water to communities impacted by the oil spill. Obele further appealed to locals to protect the facilities created by these initiatives to ensure their sustainable impact.
