Heroic Action Stops School Shooting in Oklahoma
In a remarkable act of bravery, Principal Kirk Moore of Pauls Valley High School tackled a gunman last week, potentially saving numerous lives. The local police chief commended Moore’s swift response, noting that he was shot in the leg during the confrontation.
Following the incident on Tuesday, Moore expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support. Located about 90 miles south of Oklahoma City, the high school was shaken by the alarming events that unfolded that afternoon.
Investigators revealed that Victor Lee Hawkins, 20, entered the school lobby armed with two semi-automatic handguns. He ordered students to the ground and attempted to fire at one student, but his weapon malfunctioned, preventing the deadly shot.
After resolving the weapon issue, Hawkins fired at another student but missed. Security footage and affidavit details show that Moore emerged from a nearby door, tackled Hawkins from behind, and subdued him, all while students begged for mercy and others managed to escape the dangerous situation.
Hawkins, a former student of the school, reportedly stated that he had a desire to replicate the tragic Columbine shooting from 1999. Investigators confirmed that he had taken his father’s guns without permission, claiming his intention was to harm students, faculty, and himself.
During the struggle, Hawkins shot Moore in the leg, requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, the principal has since reported that he is recovering and anticipates returning to work, expressing thanks for the support he has received.
Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May described Moore’s actions as heroic, stating that his quick response undoubtedly prevented a tragedy. Hawkins is currently in the Garvin County Detention Center, facing serious charges including firing with intent to kill and carrying a firearm to a public gathering.
Hawkins is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 8. In his own remarks, Moore attributed his actions to training, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for such critical situations faced by educators nationwide.
