Appointment of Chief Secretary in Edo State Reflects Inclusive Governance
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebolo, has appointed Martin Anayochukwu Ori, a prominent businessman and community leader from the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, to serve as the Chief Secretary of Edo State. This strategic appointment aims to enhance governance by incorporating diverse perspectives from various ethnic backgrounds.
The announcement was made yesterday by Mr. Umaru Musa Ikilolu, the Secretary to the Edo State Government, highlighting the administration’s commitment to fostering inclusivity within the state’s leadership.
Ori’s appointment represents a significant milestone as it marks the second key leadership role designated to a member of a non-Edo ethnic group during Governor Okpebolo’s tenure. Earlier, Abdulkarim Kadiri, a respected leader of the Hausa-Fulani community in Edo State, was named Special Adviser on Community Affairs, set to assume the role in November 2024.
The governor’s statement underscores his belief that inclusive governance transcends mere rhetoric; it necessitates active engagement with the populace. “Listening to the people and understanding their concerns is essential,” the statement emphasized, adding that it is equally important to give communities a voice in decision-making processes.
This approach indicates a shift towards an open and participatory governance model, where citizens who have made valuable contributions to Edo State’s development are recognized and empowered to serve in leadership roles.
Mr. Ori, known for his entrepreneurial background and extensive experience in the private sector, has established himself as a community advocate, particularly within Edo’s Igbo community. His efforts focus on supporting grassroots development initiatives aimed at improving living standards and expanding economic opportunities throughout the region.
The nomination of Ori not only highlights the importance of competence and dedication in civil service selection but also aims to reflect the diverse fabric of Edo State. His appointment is set to be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for review and approval, adhering to constitutional protocols.
