New Initiative Launched to Empower Nigerian Youth in Architecture
Hilary Uchechukwu Okpala, the Chief Executive Officer of Window Story Nigeria Limited, has announced the launch of the Omenife Foundation. This new platform aims to provide mentorship, entrepreneurial guidance, and youth empowerment, particularly targeting aspiring architects and innovators.
During a recent visit from students of the Department of Architecture at Nigeria’s Nile University, Abuja, Okpala emphasized the foundation’s goal to give back to society through fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs and industry leaders. He highlighted the necessity for structured mentorship to cultivate young minds eager to contribute to national development.
Okpala stressed the urgent need for collaboration between the industry and academia to influence the future of Nigeria’s built environment positively. He encouraged students to think beyond traditional imported concepts and explore the potential of indigenous materials and local innovations. This shift toward local solutions is crucial for developing competitive architectural practices within Africa.
As part of the excursion, designed to broaden the students’ understanding of the Nigerian architecture industry, participants engaged in factory tours and discussions centered on innovation and local manufacturing processes. The initiative aimed to equip students with practical insights into the real-world implications of their academic studies.
The theme of the event was “Bridging Architecture and Modern Interior Window Covering Systems in the Nigerian Building Industry,” which allowed students to delve deep into the critical interplay between architecture and modern design solutions. A particularly engaging segment involved students interrogating industry leaders on topics such as resilience, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
In her opening remarks, Helen Uchechukwu Okpara, Managing Director of Window Story Nigeria Ltd, underscored the importance of events like these in reinforcing the alliance between academia and industry within Nigeria’s architectural community. She encouraged students to see architecture not merely as design but as a discipline that encompasses technical detailing and innovative material utilization—key elements vital for Africa’s development.
Professor Oluwafemi Akande, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Nile University, articulated that the visit was intended to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. Expressing gratitude to Window Story Nigeria Ltd for their hospitality, he remarked that the excursion provided invaluable insight into local manufacturing and innovation for both students and faculty.
Highlighting the significance of the event, various dignitaries, including the former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Mr. Moradeke Okunrimboe, and Bosede Idegbesor, President of the Abuja Chapter of the Institute, commended the initiative. They noted that such engagements would inspire students to pursue careers focused on manufacturing and innovation within the architectural realm.
As a leading Nigerian manufacturing company, Window Story Nigeria Ltd specializes in modern interior window covering systems and is recognized for its innovation-driven approach to local manufacturing. With a commitment to fostering local solutions, the company is poised to make significant contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s built environment and manufacturing sectors.
