Open Startup, a prominent pan-African organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems across the continent, has unveiled ‘The Science Road.’ This new strategic initiative aims to enhance Africa’s capabilities in science, deep technology, and research-driven innovation, facilitating the transition of these endeavors from laboratories to globally competitive industries.
10th Anniversary Marks a New Direction
The announcement, made in Tunis on June 29, 2026, coincides with Open Startup’s 10th anniversary since its inception in Tunisia in 2016. The organization asserts that this shift reflects its evolution from a university entrepreneurship competition to a comprehensive pan-African investment readiness and ecosystem development platform. Over the past decade, Open Startup has supported more than 3,000 founders and 1,000 startups across more than 20 African nations.
Science Road: Uniting Programs for Greater Impact
The Science Road initiative consolidates Open Startup’s various programs under a single acceleration platform, effectively positioning the organization as a bridge connecting African founders, scientists, markets, partners, and capital. This focus will center on ventures working on innovative solutions in sectors such as health, climate, artificial intelligence, and related technologies.
Introducing Openers First: A New Investment Arm
As part of its reorganization, Open Startup will launch Openers First, a new investment arm dedicated to providing early-stage funding to promising ventures emerging from the platform. This funding initiative aims to complement the organization’s existing efforts in investment readiness and to contribute to Open Startup’s long-term sustainability, while helping startups bridge the funding gap between pre-seed and seed-stage growth.

Under its new framework, Open Startup plans to organize its offerings along two primary pathways. The first pathway targets pre-seed innovators looking to transform their research into investable ventures, while the second aims to assist seed-stage startups in scaling their technologies to tackle critical market and societal challenges. These efforts will be reinforced by stronger ecosystem partnerships spanning from Tunis to South Africa, collaborating with partners such as CERI, Stellenbosch University, and LaunchLab.

Over the past ten years, Open Startup has cultivated a network of over 500 mentors, advisors, and experts, and trained more than 300 coaches. The organization has successfully connected founders with investors, businesses, universities, and policymakers both across Africa and globally. Notable partners in this endeavor include KfW AfricaGrow, AfricInvest, the U.S. Department of State, and several esteemed academic institutions such as Columbia University and MIT.
