Collaboration to Enhance Sex Education in Osun State
Action Health Incorporated, a prominent non-governmental organization, has partnered with the Osun State Government to conduct a three-day training program aimed at empowering 45 secondary school teachers with essential knowledge in comprehensive sex education and female genital mutilation (FGM) prevention.
Support from International Organizations for FGM Eradication
This training initiative falls under the joint UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and UNICEF program dedicated to the eradication of female genital mutilation, supported by various international organizations committed to improving health outcomes for women and girls.
Equipping Teachers for Effective Engagement
During an event held at the Osun Government Secretariat in Osogbo, Uzoma Ayodeji, a Gender/FGM Analyst for UNFPA in the South West region, emphasized the importance of equipping teachers with the skills necessary to engage their students in meaningful discussions on sex education. This initiative aims to enhance efforts to eliminate FGM in the state.
Participants Drawn from Diverse Schools
Ayodeji noted that teachers from both public and private schools will participate in this training, which will temporarily suspend regular classes to maximize student involvement, particularly among young girls. This shift in strategy marks a significant evolution from previous approaches that directly trained students.
Visible Impact and Future Aspirations
Since the inception of its initiatives in Osun, Action Health Incorporated has implemented several successful programs targeting the eradication of FGM, evidenced by a notable decline in its prevalence across the state. Ayodeji expressed optimism, stating that the goal is to see FGM completely eradicated in Osun State by 2030.
Collective Efforts Needed to Combat FGM
Emphasizing the role of community involvement, Ayodeji urged residents to report any cases of FGM to the relevant authorities, reinforcing the need for a unified approach from all stakeholders to eliminate this harmful practice.
Empowering Teachers to Become Advocates
Fatima Idris, the program director at Action Health, encouraged participants to share their newfound knowledge with students and fellow teachers. She underscored that educators must view their students like their own children, creating a safe environment within classrooms where accurate information can thrive.
Local Commitment to Eradicating FGM
According to reports from PUNCH, the Osun State government, alongside partner organizations, is actively working to eradicate FGM and foster healthy living standards. Residents of Akinlar, in Osun State, have taken a stand by announcing their commitment to renounce this harmful practice and to alert authorities if they witness any violations.
Community Leaders Advocate for Change
Oba Yisrael Oluwabusola, a representative of the Arakinlar tribe, voiced his community’s dedication to ending FGM and pledged to collaborate with health and law enforcement agencies. This declaration marks a significant step forward in the ongoing fight against FGM in the region.
