Launch of Pan-African AI Ethics and Governance Fellowship
The Policy Innovation Center (PIC), in collaboration with the African Hub for Innovation & Development (AHFID) and supported by Luminate, has unveiled the Pan-African AI Ethics and Governance Fellowship. This flagship initiative aims to bolster Africa’s leadership and enhance institutional capacities in ethical and accountable governance for artificial intelligence.
Addressing Critical AI Challenges in Africa
This fellowship arrives at a pivotal moment as artificial intelligence continues to influence governance, public services, and economic frameworks throughout Africa. As nations increasingly adopt AI solutions in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and finance, issues related to algorithmic bias, data misuse, inadequate accountability systems, and societal exclusion remain pressing concerns. The fellowship seeks to equip a new generation of African leaders with the necessary skills to develop and implement AI systems that resonate with the continent’s core values and development objectives.
A Transformative Learning Experience
Dr. Osasui Dirisu, Executive Director of the Policy Innovation Center (PIC), set an inspiring tone for the program, highlighting the varied expertise within the cohort. She encouraged fellows to see themselves as active participants in knowledge creation rather than mere recipients of information. Dr. Dirisu articulated the fellowship’s goal to intentionally shape AI development in Africa, stating that it focuses on building practical governance capacity while cultivating the next generation of leaders dedicated to ethical AI that serves the public good.
The Structure of the Fellowship Program
The 12-week virtual program will assemble over 50 mid-to-senior-level professionals from across the continent, representing governments, regulatory bodies, civil society, academia, media, and the private sector. Through a blend of virtual learning, expert-led discussions, policy labs, and mentorship, participants will create effective governance tools, including tailored policy frameworks, audit mechanisms, and accountability systems designed specifically for the African context.
Fostering Leadership and Collaboration Across the Region
Dr. Kunle Kakanfo, CEO of AHFID, emphasized that the fellowship not only aims to cultivate leadership in AI ethics and governance but also to foster meaningful connections and networks across Africa. He noted that the program will serve as a catalyst for necessary changes in AI ethics and governance throughout the continent, facilitating cross-border collaboration and the exchange of valuable experiences.
A Proactive Regulatory Approach
From a regulatory standpoint, Dr. Olubunmi Ajala, National Director of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), articulated that this fellowship represents Africa’s strategic response to the global AI revolution. He stressed that without proper governance and ethical considerations, the consequences could extend beyond technological failures, potentially impacting populations adversely and causing significant damage.
Expectations and Aspirations from Participants
Participants in the fellowship have expressed high hopes for its impact. Ayobola Adedayo, Head of Product at Auto Check Africa from Nigeria, aims to deepen her expertise in AI policy and governance to influence AI development in Nigeria and beyond. Similarly, Carol Odero, a Kenyan technology journalist, aspires to challenge the narrative that AI is too new for regulation, intending to utilize insights gained to enhance the dialogue around AI ethics and governance.
Contributions to Future AI Governance in Africa
This fellowship is anticipated to significantly expand Africa’s network of AI governance experts, strengthen policy influence, and promote the development of more responsible AI systems on the continent. Furthermore, the initiative will position Nigeria and its partners as leaders in advancing AI ethics and governance in Africa, contributing to the global discourse on the intersection of technology and society.
