Significant Achievements in Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Efforts
Despite a troubling surge in kidnappings, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategy to combat terrorism has shown notable tactical progress, as outlined in a recent report by the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI).
Impressive Operational Statistics
The policy statement, authored by IMPI Chairman Dr. Omoniyi Akinsiju, reveals that since the beginning of 2023, combined efforts from police and military operations have resulted in the elimination of over 8,000 bandits and terrorists. Furthermore, these forces have apprehended 11,600 criminals and seized thousands of weapons.
Successful Rescue Missions Highlighted
The report emphasizes the federal government’s successful counter-terrorism initiatives, stating that significant tactical victories have been achieved in tackling banditry. On June 6, 2026, Operation Hadinkai successfully liberated 360 kidnapping victims from a fortified terrorist compound in the Mandara Mountains of Borno State. Moreover, in Kogi State’s Yagba West area, Nigerian Army troops and local vigilante groups rescued two individuals from kidnappers, showcasing the collaborative efforts in this domain.
Enhanced Rescue Operations Across Regions
In May and June 2026, operations in Borno State facilitated extensive search and rescue missions, leading to the liberation of hundreds. Similar joint operations in Kwara State resulted in the rescue of 21 victims from kidnappers. IMPI noted a significant paradigm shift, with recent government efforts yielding large-scale rescues of nationals abducted in Kebbi, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, and Borno states.
Strategic Approaches in the Fight Against Terrorism
IMPI elaborated on various strategies employed by security agencies to combat terrorism. The military utilizes a multi-faceted approach to secure the release of captives. This includes swift and aggressive operations into remote forests and mountains, such as the Babanla Forest in Kwara, forcing armed bandits to abandon their captives. When kidnappers demand hefty ransoms, military intelligence monitors their movements and employs covert rescue tactics, like in a recent Plateau State operation to rescue a veteran held for a ransom of ₦200 million.
Utilization of Advanced Technology in Operations
Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) play a crucial role before launching airstrikes. Precision airstrikes and drone sweeps often neutralize militant hideouts, enabling rescued individuals to escape and find safety. Those who are freed typically receive initial medical attention and sustenance in field ambulances or military facilities before being reunited with their families.
Investment in Military Capability and Training
IMPI credits recent frontline successes to significant investments made by the Tinubu administration in military equipment and the enhancement of personnel training. Key assets acquired include 24 advanced M-346FA fighter aircraft, four T-129 ATAK helicopters, and five Agusta 109S Trekker helicopters. The Nigerian Army has also received 12 MD 530F Kayuse attack helicopters, in addition to Diamond DA62 surveillance aircraft and King Air 360i multi-purpose aircraft.
Need for Continued Improvement
While these advancements are commendable, experts emphasize the necessity for further enhancements in operational readiness for security personnel. Addressing the socio-economic challenges in remote regions where criminal elements thrive is also essential in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
