FEC Approves NYSC Reforms Led by Civilians
In a significant shift, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved new reforms for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), transitioning its leadership from military oversight to civilian management. Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande announced that the long-standing program would now incorporate specialized training aimed at enhancing the employability of corps members.
Investment in Infrastructure Projects
The FEC has greenlit a considerable investment of ₦2.078 trillion for road projects across ten states and allocated ₦34.398 billion for constructing the Gboko airstrip in Benue State. These investments are part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s transportation network and support regional needs.
Funding for Marine Infrastructure and Safety Projects
Additionally, the FEC approved a budget of ₦286 billion targeted at marine infrastructure and safety initiatives. This funding is intended to modernize port operations, bolster maritime security, and safeguard Nigeria’s marine environment.
Overview of Fuel Pricing Adjustments
During a press briefing following the FEC meeting, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele highlighted the government’s ongoing consultations with fuel distributors and regulatory bodies to establish a more transparent pricing system. Despite recent declines in global oil prices to around $75 to $76 per barrel, there are mounting concerns over gasoline distributors’ reluctance to reduce retail prices.
NYSC Reform Details and Goals
The new NYSC reforms are designed to maintain a one-year service duration while introducing a flexible skills-based training model. The initiative aims to improve youth employability and promote national integration through coordinated programs. Olawande noted that these changes stemmed from extensive collaboration across various ministries and input from Nigerian youth, all aimed at enhancing skills development and job creation.
Health Sector Interventions and New Center for Snakebite Treatment
In parallel with infrastructure initiatives, the council approved the establishment of a National Snakebite Treatment and Research Center, supported by a health sector intervention package worth ₦73.9 billion. This center aims to provide specialized care and conduct research on snakebite management, addressing the estimated 43,000 incidents recorded annually across Nigeria.
Maritime Investments Enhancing Efficiency and Safety
The FEC’s maritime project approvals include acquiring anti-pollution vessels and pilot cutter boats, enhancing navigation safety and improving environmental protection efforts. These measures are vital for Nigeria’s blue economy, aimed at upgrading operational efficiency, safeguarding marine ecosystems, and generating economic opportunities.
