Nigerian Finance Minister Launches Tax Ombud Office Digital Platforms
On Monday, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economic Affairs, Taiwo Oyedele, introduced the official website, a toll-free call center, and a digital case management portal for the Tax Ombud Office. These initiatives aim to foster a fair, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly tax environment in Nigeria.
Government’s Commitment to Tax System Reform
During the unveiling ceremony held in Abuja, Mr. Oyedele emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s broader fiscal reform strategy designed to enhance taxpayer confidence, streamline tax administration, and bolster accountability within the revenue system. He acknowledged that disputes are a natural part of any tax system, but highlighted the necessity for reliable and accessible dispute resolution mechanisms.
Building Trust in Tax Administration
“Modern tax systems should not only focus on efficient revenue collection but must also emphasize fairness, accountability, transparency, and trust,” Oyedele remarked. He called for dispute resolution processes that ensure taxpayers are heard fairly, treated with respect, and afforded affordable and timely solutions.
Establishment of the Tax Ombud Office
Mr. Oyedele stated that the creation of the Tax Ombud Office is a significant step in ongoing tax reforms aimed at minimizing arbitrary practices, protecting taxpayer rights, encouraging voluntary compliance, and establishing a globally competitive fiscal framework. He described the newly launched digital platform as ushering in a “new era in tax administration”, where taxpayers are viewed as partners in national development rather than adversaries.
Leadership Vision for Taxpayer Relations
In his speech, the Chief Executive Officer of the Tax Ombud, John Nwabueze, highlighted that this launch signifies a crucial institutional reform focused on enhancing fairness, transparency, and public trust in Nigeria’s tax administration. He explained that the office, formed under the Nigeria Joint Revenue Commission Establishment Act of 2025, serves as an independent entity designed to address taxpayers’ grievances and disputes.
Enhancing Accessibility and Public Trust
Nwabueze elaborated that the Tax Ombud Office was established to offer taxpayers an accessible, timely, and cost-effective method for filing complaints and resolving disputes, thereby promoting voluntary tax compliance. The office will facilitate communication between taxpayers and revenue authorities through mediation, stakeholder engagement, and alternative dispute resolution strategies, aimed at alleviating prolonged litigation.
Strengthening Public Awareness of Economic Reforms
Also addressing attendees at the launch was the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohamed Idris. He underlined the importance of raising public awareness regarding the role of the Tax Ombud and the government’s broader economic reform objectives. Idris pointed out that many Nigerians still lack a comprehensive understanding of the reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Positive Economic Indicators Amid Reform Efforts
Highlighting recent economic indicators, the minister noted signs of positive change, including increased government revenues and investor interest in Nigeria. He pledged that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation would continue to support initiatives aimed at enhancing public awareness of the reforms and the functions of the Tax Ombud Office.
