Integrity in Governance Crucial for Nigeria’s Progress
James Faleke, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, emphasized that Nigeria’s development hinges on the commitment of public servants to uphold integrity and adhere to due process, even amidst political pressures. He made these remarks during a book launch in Abuja, where “Nigerian Parliament: A Practical Guide for Members,” authored by Oscar Okoro, a retired clerk of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, was unveiled to commemorate his 60th birthday and retirement.
Civil Servants: The Backbone of Governance
Faleke recognized civil servants as essential to governance, underscoring their pivotal role in enacting government policies and programs in alignment with established regulations. “Civil servants are the backbone of the country,” he stated. “They are the technocrats upon whom we politicians rely.”
A Call for Dedication to National Development
He argued that the commitment to national development necessitates a genuine drive for the country’s success and the efficacy of its institutions. “True dedication to Nigeria’s development is crucial. A belief in this country should inspire a desire for its success,” Faleke added.
A Tribute to a Dedicated Public Servant
Faleke paid tribute to Okoro, characterizing him as an exemplary civil servant whose career serves as inspiration for younger generations entering public service. “Okoro is exceptionally diligent. He prioritizes doing things correctly over financial gains,” he remarked, expressing confidence in Okoro’s continued success post-retirement.

Abubakar Saidu, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, shared that his personal relationship with Okoro transcended professional boundaries and extended to familial ties. He praised Okoro as a consummate professional whose work ethic provides invaluable lessons for emerging civil servants. “His dedication and patience are commendable. He exemplifies professionalism,” Saidu noted.
Recognizing a Legacy of Integrity
House of Representatives Spokesman Akin Rotimi also honored Okoro’s service, describing him as a paragon of integrity and hard work. “Those in public service should regard him as a model of integrity and dedication,” he encouraged. Rotimi acknowledged the challenges in replacing Okoro’s extensive experience and knowledge in the National Assembly’s operations.
Reflections on a Distinguished Career
In a humble reply, Okoro attributed his accomplishments in public service to divine guidance, diligence, patience, and humility. “Life is a demanding journey; understanding oneself and exemplifying diligence, patience, and respect are essential for success in Parliament and beyond,” he remarked.
A New Chapter for Okoro
Following his retirement, Okoro plans to return to his law practice and consultancy while dedicating more time to mentoring youth and serving in community initiatives. Additionally, Professor Kabir Danladi from Ahmadu Bello University reviewed Okoro’s book, describing it as a testament to his 27 years of dedicated service. Danladi highlighted that the 335-page guide offers practical insights into the Nigerian legislative process, serving as a valuable resource for lawmakers, academics, and citizens alike.
The launch brought together Members of Parliament, legislative staff, academics, and civil servants to celebrate Okoro’s significant contributions to the Parliament and public service landscape.
