Oyo State Partners with CGIAR to Strengthen Cassava and Cocoa Industries
The government of Oyo State is set to collaborate with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the largest publicly funded agri-food research network globally, which includes the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as one of its key research centers. The aim is to enhance the cassava and cocoa value chains in the region.
High Hopes from Oyo State’s Agricultural Potential
During a recent meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde, CGIAR Principal Scientist Sandra Milak and IITA Deputy Director-General Bernard Vanlauwe emphasized the agricultural potential of Oyo State. They noted that the state’s ongoing investments in processing and value addition position it well to benefit from a partnership focused on advancing the cassava and cocoa sectors.
Strategies for Cassava Production and Value Enhancement
Following the meeting, Milak shared insights on plans to position Oyo State as a leading producer of cassava. She emphasized the need for understanding the key elements of the state’s value chain and identifying existing challenges. The partnership seeks to provide solutions that will facilitate better agricultural practices, improve food security, and establish a comprehensive agribusiness network benefiting local farmers.
Expert Insight into Value Chain Development
Vanlauwe reiterated the significance of cassava and cocoa in Oyo State’s agricultural landscape. He stated that IITA possesses extensive expertise in these crops and expressed optimism about developing a collective plan to enhance both value chains. The focus will be on collaboration to detail the specific needs and bottlenecks identified within these sectors.
Transformative Goals for African Agriculture
As the head of science at CGIAR, Milak described the organization’s mission to support global agricultural transformation by improving food systems, land, and water management. With a dedicated focus on food security in Africa, she highlighted the importance of the partnership for Oyo State’s agribusiness aspirations and broader agricultural innovation.
Science as a Catalyst for Agribusiness Success
Milak stressed the crucial role of science in enhancing the agribusiness landscape. She underscored CGIAR’s commitment to translating scientific research into tangible business opportunities, which could significantly elevate the agricultural value proposition. This collaboration aims to identify precise challenges within the value chains, helping local stakeholders develop effective strategies to overcome them.
Addressing Industry Bottlenecks for Sustainable Growth
Identifying the bottlenecks in the cocoa production value chain is critical to unlocking Oyo State’s agricultural potential. Milak noted the importance of understanding processing issues, infrastructure limitations, and market demand to foster sustainable growth. By establishing a stronger connection between farmers and processors, the initiative could stimulate demand for higher-quality produce and improve overall market access.
The delegation from CGIAR, led by IITA-CGIAR Secretary General Simeon Efui, includes notable members such as Tahiro Abdullahi, Ibnou Deng, and Toyin Oke, further underscoring the commitment to collaborate with Oyo State in transforming its agricultural framework.
