Oyo State Government Enhances Flood Prevention Strategies
The Oyo State government has reiterated its commitment to mitigating flooding across the region by prioritizing sustainable waterway maintenance, public education, and the implementation of targeted erosion control projects. This initiative aims to bolster the state’s resilience against seasonal climatic challenges, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
Ademola Aderinto, Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources, shared insights during a recent interview regarding the seasonal climate forecast for 2026. According to data from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Oyo State anticipates a significant amount of rainfall throughout the year, albeit slightly less than the previous year.
Despite the forecasted decrease in overall rainfall, Aderinto emphasized that Oyo State remains vulnerable to flash floods. He attributed this risk to the increasing incidence of short, intense rainfalls exacerbated by climate change and global warming.
The ongoing administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is actively addressing flood-related risks with a series of proactive measures aimed at safeguarding the community. Aderinto mentioned that earlier in the year, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources launched the first phase of de-silting operations for rivers and drainage channels statewide, which is a part of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP).
The second phase of these operations is currently in progress, focusing on critical river channels and areas with heightened flooding risk. Aderinto reported that over 50% of identified waterways have already been cleared of sediment, with further training planned to ensure unrestricted water flow and minimize flooding potential during the rainy season.
In addition to physical interventions, Aderinto highlighted the state’s intensified public awareness campaigns, encouraging residents—especially those in flood-prone areas—to seek safer accommodations before the onset of heavy rains. He commended those who have heeded government advisories and urged everyone to cooperate for the sake of community safety.
Looking ahead, the state government plans to initiate additional erosion control and culvert construction projects under its watershed management program across all three senatorial districts. This intervention aims to fortify the state’s flood control infrastructure, providing vital support to communities most at risk.
Aderinto reaffirmed the Oyo State government’s dedication to environmental stewardship, assuring residents that ongoing proactive measures will be implemented to combat the effects of climate change. The ministry is committed to fostering a safer and healthier environment for all inhabitants of the region.
