Students and Teachers Share Their Ordeal After Abduction
The emotional toll of a harrowing four-hour trek through a dense forest has left deep scars on the victims of a recent kidnapping incident in Nigeria. Governor Seyi Makinde has assured both the affected students and teachers of complete support following their rescue from captivity.
Government Commitment to Victims’ Well-Being
In a statement addressing the media after the victims were safely handed over to state authorities, Governor Makinde affirmed that the government would take full responsibility for their welfare, education, and recovery as they reunite with their families. The victims were transferred to the state government by military personnel after a 48-hour period involving medical treatment and psychological evaluations at the Nigeria Army Medical Service in Ibadan.
Principal Recalls Traumatic Experience
In a heart-wrenching recounting of events, Mrs. Rachel Allam, the principal of Oriyele International School, revealed that terrorists brutally murdered two staff members during their capture. She described the experience as traumatic and highlighted that the kidnappers employed psychological tactics to instill fear among the captives, insisting that the government had abandoned them.
Bravery Amidst Fear
Speaking with journalists, Mrs. Allam articulated the harrowing conditions that shaped their captivity, saying, “The kidnappers used fear to control us.” Despite the dire circumstances, the victims drew strength from the knowledge that many Nigerians were praying for their safe return. She expressed profound gratitude for surviving the ordeal and for the prayers that encouraged them during their confinement.
Support from State Officials and Security Forces
During a formal handover ceremony, Governor Makinde assured the victims that the traumatic experiences they endured would not define their futures. He emphasized the importance of reuniting the victims with their families, noting that such a reunion plays a vital role in their psychological healing. Makinde reiterated the government’s commitment to providing necessary support until they fully return to normal life.
Calls for Comprehensive Action Against Kidnapping
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) commended the rescue operation but cautioned that it should not be seen as an isolated victory given the escalating kidnapping crisis in Nigeria. The NHRC’s executive director highlighted the urgent need to intensify efforts to secure the release of countless individuals still held captive across the country.
Unity Against Insurgency Emphasized by NOA
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) called for national unity in the face of growing security challenges, praising the effective collaboration among security forces that led to the rescue operation. NOA Director-General Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu underscored the significance of public cooperation in ensuring safety, reminding citizens that keeping the nation secure is a collective responsibility.
