Oyo State Aims to Become Tourism Capital of Southwest Nigeria
Governor Seyi Makinde announced that his administration is committed to establishing Oyo State as the tourism capital of southwest Nigeria, positioning it as a key destination for travelers nationwide. He made this declaration during the Oyo State International Tourism Summit 2026, which took place at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre.
Investment in Infrastructure and Security to Boost Tourism
In a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor highlighted several critical infrastructure projects designed to enhance connectivity between towns and communities. He emphasized that improving security and revitalizing tourist attractions will significantly elevate tourism activities in the state in the coming years.
Continuity in Tourism Policy is Essential
During the summit, themed “From Foundation Building to Governance: Building Lasting Tourism,” Makinde underscored the importance of maintaining consistent policies and ideas to foster long-term investment in tourism development. He expressed confidence that with ongoing efforts and infrastructure improvements, Oyo is poised to compete for the title of tourism capital in the southwest region.
Promising Infrastructure Developments
Makinde shared insights about various road projects underway, pointing out that enhanced connectivity would serve as a catalyst for both tourism and economic growth. He proudly noted the condition of the state highway, stating that he could drive over 180 kilometers without encountering a pothole.
Building Robust Institutional Frameworks
The governor acknowledged the concerns faced by investors regarding the sustainability of policies amid administrative transitions. He reassured attendees that his administration is focused on establishing enduring systems rather than temporary initiatives tied to specific leaders. This includes a strategic approach to tourism development that emphasizes long-lasting structures.
Long-Term Plans for Tourism Development
Highlighting the importance of continuity, Makinde referenced the extensive 110-kilometer ring road project, which illustrates the setbacks caused by a lack of consistent policy over the years. He also announced the creation of a 25-year tourism master plan committee, alongside a development framework to enhance tourism assets such as Lake Eleele. Additionally, the state has entered a 15-year concession agreement with System Specs to manage Bowers Tower, further showcasing its commitment to sustainable tourism.
A Call for Collaborative Governance in Tourism
Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, praised Makinde’s efforts in infrastructure development, urging other governors to prioritize continuity in governance and institutionalize tourism initiatives. Fayemi advocated for a southwest tourism circuit that connects various attractions in the region. The sentiments were echoed by participants like film director Kunle Afolayan and Howadir Africa’s Managing Director, Obafela Bank Oremo, who emphasized the positive effects of improved road infrastructure on tourism growth.
Kola Lawal, who presented Oyo State’s 25-year tourism master plan framework, noted that the initiative aims to attract investments while celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage. Meanwhile, Wasiu Olatubosun, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, expressed optimism about the framework being crafted to ensure sustainable, coordinated, and consistent policy implementation in Oyo’s tourism sector.
