Bayelsa PDP Urges Governor to Address Hunger and Poverty
The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Douye Diri to make combating hunger and poverty a priority in the second half of 2026. The party expressed concern that many residents are struggling to meet their basic needs amid escalating economic difficulties.
Poverty Persists Despite Increased Revenue
In a statement issued by Public Relations Secretary Ikaebimo Mark, the opposition party noted that, despite a rise in state revenue from federal allocations and derived income, the cost of living continues to escalate. Many Bayelsans are experiencing a decline in purchasing power, raising alarms about the community’s overall welfare.
Hunger Knows No Boundaries
The PDP emphasized that hunger transcends political, religious, and ethnic lines, urging that it should be treated as a critical issue by responsible governments. The party expressed disappointment over the lack of tangible investment resulting from several memorandums announced by the state government, which, they argue, have not yet translated into job creation or industrial growth.
Call for Economic Empowerment Initiatives
The party advocates for governmental programs designed to stimulate economic activity, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and empower both youth and women. They urge the Diri administration to redirect its focus toward policies that genuinely prioritize the well-being of the people.
PDP Offers Support for Genuine Measures
In its statement, the PDP reiterated its readiness to support any sincere efforts aimed at alleviating the current hardships faced by Bayelsans. The party expressed a willingness to contribute constructive policy ideas and practical solutions for the broader interests of the community.
Government Denies Opposition Claims
In response, the Bayelsa State Government refuted the allegations, stating that the Diri administration has consistently implemented measures aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing the welfare of its citizens. Ebiuwo Kokuobiyai, the Secretary for Information, Direction and Strategy, described the opposition’s claims as misleading.
Investment in Infrastructure and Agriculture
Kokuobiyai highlighted ongoing projects such as the Nembe Brass Road and the second phase of Glory Drive, asserting that these initiatives have improved connectivity and created economic opportunities. He also cited agricultural programs, including the Bayelsa State Livestock Development Program, aimed at boosting food production and ensuring food security.
Mitigating Economic Challenges
While acknowledging the broad national economic challenges affecting all states, Kokuobiyai maintained that the Bayelsa State Government has been proactive in mitigating their impact through strategic investments and social intervention programs. He emphasized that the administration remains committed to prioritizing the welfare of Bayelsans, despite the harsh economic realities facing the state.
