PDP Criticizes Local Government Elections in Gombe State as Undemocratic
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has condemned the recent local government elections, labeling them a “mockery” of democracy. The party argues that the elections lacked transparency and failed to create a fair environment for opposing political groups.
Opposition Boycotts Elections and Criticizes Governance
Several opposition parties chose to boycott the elections due to concerns over electoral integrity. They have taken the opportunity to criticize the administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, particularly in light of recent structural demolitions across the state and the expulsion of Gombawa Motors from the Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo Mega Motor Park.
PDP Statement Highlights Concerns Over Election Integrity
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its communications director, Abdulkadir Ahmad Duq, the PDP articulated its disappointment, asserting that the process conducted by the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) did not adhere to democratic standards. The commission announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 11 chairpersonship and 114 councilorship positions contested in the elections.
Accusations of Electoral Fraud and Subversion
The PDP characterized the elections as a façade, pointing to alleged widespread fraud as the basis for its boycott. The party described the elections as a farce, stating that necessary materials such as ballot boxes were never delivered to polling stations, echoing concerns from the previous local government elections held under the current administration.
Ongoing Tensions Between Government and Residents
Following the elections, the PDP accused the state administration of further undermining democratic principles through various actions. The party referred to a viral video featuring the governor, criticizing him for making comments that they deemed derogatory toward citizens, which they argue violate fundamental rights and undermine democratic governance.
Concerns Over Gombawa Motors’ Expulsion
The PDP has also taken issue with the removal of Gombawa Motors from the Dankwambo Mega Motor Park, asserting that the decision was politically motivated. The party emphasized that members of the transport company, as residents of Gombe State, have the right to express their political opinions freely and should be permitted to operate in state-run facilities without fear of reprisal.
Call for Upholding Democratic Values in Governance
In light of these events, the PDP has urged the state government to recommit to upholding democratic values, respect citizens’ constitutional rights, and ensure equitable governance. They argue that fair treatment and transparency are foundational to a healthy democratic society.
