PDP Urges Action on Poverty Amid Stadium Focus
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to prioritize urgent issues such as widespread hunger, unemployment, poverty, inadequate healthcare, and poor educational outcomes. The party’s statement comes in light of the state government’s ongoing focus on the ambitious stadium project at Igbogene, Yenagoa, which they believe is a misallocation of resources given the current economic challenges.
Examining the Investment in the Stadium Project
Valued at approximately N100 billion, the stadium project is touted as an initiative that will generate employment opportunities for the youth and position Bayelsa State as a key hub for football and other sporting events in Nigeria. Ground clearance for the project commenced in August 2024, with the groundbreaking ceremony officiated by former President Goodluck Jonathan on February 17, 2025, when Governor Diri was still part of the PDP.
Shift in Political Allegiance
Governor Diri officially transitioned from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on November 3, 2025, just nine months following the inception of the stadium project. The PDP expressed dismay in a statement released by Public Relations Secretary Mark Ikaebimo, emphasizing that the government’s focus on the stadium overruns more critical needs such as food security, unemployment, and healthcare access.
Concerns Over Economic Priorities
In its statement, the PDP highlighted the peculiar choice of investing N100 billion in a stadium while many residents face dire conditions, lacking basic necessities such as food and drinking water. The party argued that while the development of sports infrastructure is essential, the urgency of addressing the core issues plaguing the state’s populace should take precedence. Furthermore, they criticized the timing of such expenditure amidst the challenges faced by the agricultural sector and the many small and medium-sized enterprises that have succumbed to the prevailing economic climate.
Redefining Youth Empowerment
The PDP rejected the government’s portrayal of the stadium as a tool for youth empowerment, asserting that true empowerment manifests in improved living conditions. According to the party, the most significant infrastructure a government can establish is its citizens’ economic wellbeing. They emphasized that youth empowerment should be measured by employment rates, the success of small businesses, and the availability of opportunities for young people to thrive in a productive environment.
Questions About Existing Facilities
Additionally, the PDP expressed concern about the neglect of the existing Samson Siasia Stadium, which has historically served the state. They questioned the government’s claims that sports serve as a primary means of youth empowerment and demanded transparency regarding the number of youth allegedly benefitting from sports initiatives over the past six years. The party is calling for a detailed account of the economic impact of the stadium and the efficacy of sports-focused programs, which they believe should be scrutinized in light of the state’s pressing needs.
Call for Transparency and Economic Initiatives
In closing, the PDP urged the state government to provide comprehensive details on the stadium project, including procurement processes, financing arrangements, and projected economic benefits. The party contends that the people of Bayelsa State deserve full transparency regarding such a high-budget initiative. Furthermore, they are calling for immediate declarations of economic recovery plans, job creation initiatives, and food security measures to combat the worsening living conditions across the state.
The Bayelsa State Government has yet to respond to the PDP’s recent criticisms, leaving residents to ponder the effectiveness of current leadership in addressing fundamental societal issues.
