SEATTLE — U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino commended FIFA’s decision to rescind the suspension of forward Folarin Balogun, asserting that the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) had already faced substantial repercussions after being forced to play with 10 men for 35 minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun, who netted the opening goal for the Americans, received a red card in the 64th minute following an extensive VAR review due to a hard challenge on Bosnian defender Tarik Mujaremović. Despite being down a player, the U.S. secured a 2-0 victory.
FIFA’s Initial Ruling and Subsequent Reconsideration
Initially, FIFA stated that referee Rafael Kraus’ decision was not subject to appeal, resulting in a one-match suspension for Balogun, which would have sidelined him for Monday’s Round of 16 match against Belgium. However, on Sunday, FIFA announced the lifting of Balogun’s suspension, allowing him to participate in the game while placing him on a year’s probation.
FIFA emphasized that if Balogun commits any further violations of this nature during his probation, the suspension will be reinstated, and additional sanctions may be applied for new infractions.
Support for Balogun from Pochettino
“I believe my reaction mirrors that of anyone who truly values the sport, its ethics, and integrity. We all welcome this decision,” remarked Pochettino regarding Balogun’s suspension. He further stated, “The incident in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina was an unjust decision, and we were already penalized by having to play 35 minutes with 10 players.”
Pochettino clarified that he was “not involved” in the discussions surrounding Balogun’s suspension lift, although he noted that U.S. Soccer was collaborating with FIFA in the matter. When questioned about the specifics, he offered limited information.
U.S. Soccer’s Efforts and Team Preparations
“It’s part of the normal procedure, and the federation has been diligently working on this,” Pochettino noted. He acknowledged the efforts of U.S. Soccer CEO J.T. Batson and the entire federation in addressing this situation. Pochettino stated, “I am concentrated on preparing the team for the Belgium match, evaluating various strategies, and ensuring we are in optimal condition.”
Balogun’s Perspective and Conduct
In a recent press interaction, Balogun highlighted the importance of conducting oneself appropriately in such circumstances to set a positive example for younger fans, which was why he chose to shake hands with referee Klaus following the game. Pochettino believes that Balogun’s respectful demeanor contributed positively to the efforts leading to the lifting of his suspension.
“The key takeaway is that maintaining proper behavior can lead to positive outcomes,” Pochettino remarked. “I’m pleased with how he handled the situation. It’s vital to remain composed, especially when emotions run high after a match.”
On External Influences and the Road Ahead
Pochettino sidestepped inquiries about comments made by former President Donald Trump on social media expressing approval of the decision. When asked for his thoughts on whether it was suitable for Trump to reach out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, he replied, “That’s a separate issue; it’s ultimately FIFA’s resolution.”
The United States is now focusing on reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. A victory over Belgium would set the stage for a possible face-off against the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Spain and Portugal.
