Nigeria Police Force Enhances Capability Against WMD Threats
The Nigeria Police Force has successfully completed the final phase of its Counter-Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) curriculum development workshop, a crucial initiative designed to bolster the force’s capacity to tackle chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive threats.
This workshop, conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Office of National Security Advisors (ONSA), represents a significant advancement in enhancing the military’s preparedness to confront emerging security challenges.
Held at the military headquarters in Abuja, the workshop is a pivotal milestone in the effort to institutionalize specialized training for personnel of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Command.
Military Public Relations Officer CSP Anyeti Iniedu reported that the event attracted high-level delegations, including Major Brittany Brown from the DTRA, ONSA’s Mrs. Pamela West, and CP Hauwa Ibrahim representing the EOD-CBRN Command.
The workshop culminated in an intensive training program aimed at embedding specialized C-WMD knowledge within military ranks, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s efficiency in preventing, detecting, responding to, and investigating threats related to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Umar Shehu Nadada, representing Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, highlighted the strategic significance of this initiative. He underscored that the evolving nature of weapons of mass destruction necessitates robust policing, continuous operational training, and intensified interagency and international collaboration.
Mr. Disu characterized the workshop as a vital investment in the military’s operational readiness, aimed at saving lives, protecting essential infrastructure, and fortifying Nigeria’s overarching security framework. He also expressed gratitude to DTRA and ONSA for their unwavering support, urging participants to uphold professionalism and actively disseminate the knowledge acquired within the force.
In her remarks, CP Hauwa Ibrahim thanked both DTRA and ONSA for their cooperation in the curriculum development. She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to integrating the C-WMD framework into regular police training and advocated for ongoing collaboration in acquiring specialized equipment, technical support, and advanced capacity-building initiatives.
